Looking for Rochester 2GC Carburetor Base Plate for 1967 Buick Le Sabre (340 CUI)

Hello,


I am currently restoring a 1967 Buick Le Sabre equipped with a 340 cubic inch (5.6L) V8 engine and an ST300 transmission. The original carburetor on this vehicle is a Rochester 2GC 2-barrel Small Base carburetor.


I have the original carburetor core, but unfortunately, the base plate (lower body) is damaged. I am specifically looking for the bare base plate only — without any additional components or hardware.


I am located in Germany, where it is extremely difficult to find parts for classic American cars like this. I would be very grateful for any help in locating a correct Rochester 2GC base plate that fits my application and works with the factory transmission kickdown linkage.


If anyone has this part for sale, knows a supplier who ships internationally, or can recommend someone who can reproduce this part, please get in touch.

What is the number of the carburetor, probably starts with a 7 and is stamped on the body?
 
It would be better to just purchase another new/used carburetor & rebuild it if necessary What happened to the "base plate"?
 
I think my response to your original post (below) to purchase from a stateside Ebay vendor who will ship international is your best bet, There are still lots of useful used ones available on the stateside market. These were not very sophisticated carburetors and many parts are interchangeable. Just start searching on Ebay.

Here are a couple of ideas that might help...

1.) I found an Ebay vendor here in the states who sells well photo'd 2GC base plates and seems to have decent reviews ratings. Perhaps you can exchange enough photos & information with him to locate a baseplate that will match your base plate. I have no experience with working with him but 2GC parts seems to be a focus of his. I would ask for him to provide estimated shipping costs to your address in Germany. I think Ebay vendors can get some reduced rates.

Is it possible that the engine is a 300 Cubic inch V8? I do not recall a GM 340 CI, so I did a Search and here are the results:
"The 1965 Buick LeSabre came standard with a 300 cubic inch V8 engine, available in two versions: a 2-barrel carburetor version producing 210 horsepower and a 4-barrel carburetor version producing 250 horsepower. The standard transmission was a 3-speed manual, with an optional two-speed automatic (Super Turbine 300)."

2.) I 'think' this might be a better option to consider. Locate a 2GC carburetor that looks like it likely has the same base-plate and by doing this you acquire extra parts which could come in handy.
Here are a few of possibilities:
1.) Link Notes: If your engine is a 300 CI, this looks to be the original carburetor. Its missing some parts and has some corrosion but I think it could be disassembled.
2.) Link Notes: Again, if your engine this is a 300 CI, this looks to be the original carburetor. It looks to be well in tact with minimal corrosion except the large manifold vacuum fitting at rear of the baseplate is missing. If you don't have one and need this fitting, fabricating one should not be too difficult or plug it (if not needed).

3.) Link Notes: This one does not specifically state it's for a 300 CI but it looks complete. Some corrosion but it looks like it could be disassembled. It has went through some type of rebuild (according to the tag, but it's difficult to tell much or anything at all about the so-called rebuild). It does have a threaded flare fitting for the heat stove pipe for the bi-metal disk choke and it has a fitting (for the afore mentioned large vacuum port) located at the rear of the base plate.

One thing that I did notice about the above (3) 1965 2GC carburetors (above) is there is no diaphragm external to the choke to serve as a choke pull-off (to pull the choke butterfly valve open enough to provide the correct amount of air in the early stages of a cold start). This likely means that there is an internal piston serving the role of the choke pull-off. The only downside with the integrated piston is it is not nearly as adjustable as the external diaphragms. So, in my experience it may be a bit of a challenge to get this set right. I usually use my fingers and manually open the coke to learn what the engine prefers, measure the opening and try to mimic that setting with the choke pull-off.

You may want to do your own searching on Ebay and you may find anther option that you prefer. If you were stateside, all this would be easier and there were many of these 2GC carburetors manufactured. But since your located abroad, it's naturally more challenging.

I think the OP said that he/she was restoring a "1967 Buick Le Sabre equipped with a 340 cubic inch (5.6L) V8". Things changed between 1965 & 1967. I think the 300-ci was laid to rest before 1967.

Right but the 2GC on the 340 is extremely rare, I used to follow the internal design on these carburetors closely, but that was many years ago so I had to look it up. The 300 & 340 came with the same venturi diameter...
"A commonly cited venturi size for a 2-barrel carburetor on a Buick 300 engine is 1 3/16 inches (30.1625 mm)."
and
"Several sources indicate that a common venturi size for the Rochester 2GC carburetor used on Buick 340 engines is 1 3/16 inches (30.1625 mm)."

At least on Ebay, 300 CI usable looking 2GC's are still available, I don't see any used 2GCs for the short-lived 340CI (most had Carter AFB 4 bbl carburetors), 2GCs were rare on the 340CI. You would still need to ensure the choke, throttle linkage and fuel supply lines look the same by viewing the photos on the Ebay ads.

In closing, its highly unlikely that you will find a bolt on 2GC for the 340, not impossible but I'd probably look through the available used 2GC's for the 300CI.
