I have to do my timing on a 2013 Regal turbo. I went and bought Cloyes timing and balancing kits. The quality was not up to par from what I heard about these products from other mechanics in and around my area. Now I just seen people are having premature chain failures. I wish this info showed up when I first looked up this Company. This info showed up after I purchased and looked into it again once I noticed crappy parts. Had anyone used Cloyes on these cars and how well did they hold up? Thank you!

I thought Cloyes was an OEM provider for the timing kits on some GM engines?

Where did you buy the parts?

I have seen reports on the forums of knock-off timing kits for other cars (boxes and parts labeled GM or INA, for example). Some fakes are very difficult to discern even for the techs. I don't know if Cloyes gear is being cloned.

One tech's advice was to source OEM parts directly from the dealer. Alternatively, top branded parts from a local trusted parts supplier. Not random internet.

On this advice, we have a timing kit to do on a different GM car. RockAuto (online) had the Continental kit for $75. Our local wholesaler (neighbor) had the same kit for $225 which we purchased (overall his parts prices are competitive and he has a good reputation). The wholesaler also said he received complaints about recent INA timing kit quality and did not recommend them (but didn't give any more information).

The amount of effort to (re) do the timing is just too high.

Thank you responding!
I bought the two Cloyes kits from Rock Auto as well. The only thing GM in the two kits was the oil nozel.
That being said, this is what I discovered after trying to install Cloyes..the timing chain marks were opposite from old chain and did not match up and it was missing a link, the timing tensioner was completely rusted, the timing tensioner guide and the upper timing guide was so loose that the plastic had massive movement(up down and side to side play)..the plastic was not seated onto the metal, the intake cam phaser teeth did not match to old one(one tooth on Cloyes phaser was off by 1/32). This resulted in trying for 2 hours to slightly rotate intake cam to get exhaust cam phaser in place. Because of the defects, I was fighting to get exhaust cam in place and I over rotated and the intake cam slipped 4 times on me. Now I'm in the exhaust stroke but marks line up. I now have to redo it all again today and hope I can get that compression stroke back.
I put the old chain and phasers back on to see and yep! Cloyes sucks! I contacted Cloyes yesterday as I do know Don and Cody a little and I hope they can give me some insight as to why my parts are garbage.
Now for the dealership part ordering..they are four times more expensive than Rock Auto. Also I got informed yesterday that GM is putting crappy Chinese parts in their parts list. A guy bought some seals and gaskets from the dealership and when he opened the box, there was multiple packages and all said "made in China". Everything is crap unless you have old school vehicles.

Again thank you for you info and response.

Oh yeah! This will be the fourth time in a year that I'm doing my timing..first time I did it I got interupted so much that I forgot to release balancing tensioner and had to redo(second time), then yesterday was the third and now a fourth today. I have no good luck at all. I hate my life and my car!

I don't know if the turbo Regal engine had some timing revisions too. Or you got sold the (some) wrong parts.

FYI

1 - on the 2.4 engine, the timing saw a few MAJOR revisions, so parts need to match the VIN. For example, putting early VVT revision parts on a newer engine would have different chain markings and different sprocket markings.

2 - Also, check to see if the timing needs to be done on TDC exhaust or intake stroke.

These TWO problems are all over the Terrain forum. Some people managed to install the wrong revision parts / or mess up TDC and the engines had timing codes, ran poorly, or didn't run. Depends on how many parts are wrong I suppose.

There were also "minor" timing revisions on the 2.4 timing systems (e.g. higher-volume oil sprayer, upgraded main tensioner...). I think those were just to make the system last longer.
