Just had a timing chain cover gasket replace.
Drove the car home and would not shit gears.
Did not have
any problem with gears before I took it in?
Any thoughts

Just to understand, you can shift out of park, into drive? It does not shift out of first after that? Can you freely move the shifter to reverse? Back to Park?

The only transmission components near the timing cover are the cooler lines.

Probably best to start by inspecting linkage, manual control enters the drivers side of the transmission. Have someone move the shift lever while you watch.
Check the fluid per the owners manual.
Also the kick-down switch for the TH400, perhaps that got shorted, causing it to always seek passing gear.

Vacuum modulator hose is disconnected.

Yes I can put it in drive and reverse
If I put it in L1 and then shift to L2 and then into drive there is no change it seems as though it is always in drive.
Fluids look good.
Kicks down after warm up.
Does not atomatic shift until I get to about 45 mph then down shifts automatically
then hauls buns.
But between 10 and 45 just wines up the rpm?

Did you follow the hose from the vacuum modulator on the passenger side of the transmission up to the engine and check if it is disconnected on either end?
