1991 PA speaker questions

I did a search both in various stereo websites (like Crutchfield) as well as on this forum & still get conflicting answers. I'm ordering a stereo to replace the Concert Sound II of my car and it's clear that the rear deck speakers are 6"x9", but I'm told that my car has a six speaker system by some & a four speaker by others. Not just that, but I'm told by various websites that my car has 4"x6" in front and 5.25" with a tweeter by other sites..... then, one told me that I have 4"x6" in the dash with no door speakers, but I'm sure I have door speakers.....I'm so confused!!

I noticed a few people have installed 6.5" by using MDF/MDS spacers, but I haven't found if this applies to my year.

My goal is to have very high power (approx. 100 watts per speaker) & would love a pair on the rear deck, a pair in the back doors, a pair in the front doors, and a pair (or, just some tweeters) in the dash. Has anyone accomplished an install like this?

I also have a 2x12" Polk Audio subwoofer pair for the trunk, but I probably won't need it with the system I'm planning (might even consider replacing the deck speakers with small woofers).

I think you need to check your RPO codes, it is on a sticker on the plastic cover of the spare tire.

e.g.
UW0 : SPEAKER SYSTEM, 4, DUAL I/P MTD, DUAL ROOF MTD
UW4 : SPEAKER SYSTEM, 6, DUAL FRT DASH MTD F/D, DUAL
UW5 : SPEAKER SYSTEM, 6, DUAL I/P MTD, DUAL STD RGE PASS
UW6 : SPEAKER SYSTEM, 6, DUAL F/D TWEET & WWF, DUAL EXT

But you also could check the dash, the front doors 🙂

The speakers in the dash are 4x6, but to see if you have those speakers, there would "look" like there is a speaker there from the top, if the speaker cover is not there, you do not have speakers there. The PA that we have has the "inserts there" but the dash covers the whole thing.

I'll have to check on the door speakers to confirm, the only ones that I looked at other than the position where the 4x6's could go are the rears which are the 6x9. I'd say to visually check the door speakers (I would do it right now, but the car is not at the house.)

Are yours blown? because the stock speakers sound pretty good with a new head unit installed, with a sub it would be pretty much perfect in the car.

Ok, I guess I'll wait until the car is done at the mechanics....... it had that problem of shutting off with no warning while I'm driving down the street..... many people on here recommended the crank sensor, but it turned out it was the ignition module.

Any suggestions on the 6.5" fitting the doors? Ideas??

Ultimately you're going to have to take the door panels off and have a look, especially if you intend to amp the speakers. I don't know what the mounting was like in '91 but my '99 has 5.25's in the front doors and it took major mods to improve things.

Checking for your RPO codes is a great idea, but there are greater things that you should think about. First of all, how well will your car's alternator play with all of that current draw that will happen when you connect all of the toys up together? I have a 1992 Park Ave (L series) and Concert Sound II. It sounded crappy from day one. I don't have any speakers in the dash, the speakers in my front doors were 5.25 inch midrange, along with a dippy little separate tweeter which is mounted just above the mids on the doors. The speakers in the rear shelf in my car were 6x9's.

If you go back with speakers of the same size, you will save yourself much pain. If you want to run an amp, install it, but just remember that your car's alternator is what powers the whole bit; and it is only rated at about 105 amps. 😱 so don't be surprised if your headlights go dim!
