1998 Park Avenue - Cabin Air Filter Slot Pic

Just wanted to post this pic from when I installed a new cabin air filter a little while ago.



The pic is taken looking from the driver's foot well looking toward the passenger side - the gas pedal arm is against the back of the camera.

You can see down the bottom of the evaporator box where the cabin air filter sits - the front of the car is towards the left in the pic and the evaporator coil is on the right - you can barely see it.

When I pulled the old filter out this area was filled with leaves and dirt - I was able to get the small tip of the shop-vac in there to get all of the debris out.

My only regret is that I didn't do a coil cleaning while I had the old filter out and before I put the new one in. I believe I am experiencing some coil freezing due to some dust and dirt partially clogging the coil.

BTW - it took me about 20 pics to get the one good one.

Also, for anyone not familiar with this setup - the dimensions are approximately 3/4 inch wide X 3 1/2 inch tall X 12 inch deep.

Usually, coil freezing is due to a low charge, not necessarily air flow. Have you checked the High/Low pressure, it may just require 1/2 lb. (8-oz) to bring it back to normal pressure readings.

I had thought about the refrigerant HotZ28 - my plan was to check that first before digging the filter back out.

I know it's possible for the refrig to be low but the A/C blows strong and cold for about 30 mins then even if I manually keep the fan speed up it starts to lose air flow - 5-10 mins with the outside vent open and the ice melts and airflow is restored.

Typical symptoms of abnormal system pressure. Do you have a pressure gauge to check High/Low pressure? BTW, this is a typical freeze-up of the evaporator, which is more common in humid environments, and with a low system pressure.

I thought about stealing a colonoscopy scope from the hospital to clean my evaporator.... And remove any questionable polyps...😀
