Having problems shifting the gears. It has P, R D, 3,2,1

The last couple times I've used it was hard shifting down into drive, can't seem to shift into 3,2,1 at, all not that I use it a lot.

My question is, is it more of an electronic thing, some sort of sensor or whatever, or is it mechanical some sort of linkage problem??

I know on most cars you have to have your foot on the brake before you can move the shifter? But other than that is there something besides the brake sensor that sends another signal somewhere else??

Any ideas what the problem might be ?

I think this Reddit discussion and included links does a good job of covering all of the possibilities as well as a temporary work around. Link

Uum...no! We don't have a forum simply to post links to outside sources without at least answering the question first. Not everyone looking up these threads in the future for a similar problem will be able to access whatever third party source given as a link (Photobucket anybody?).

The particular reddit thread was for someone who is not able to shift out of park.

@cowboy1611, if the gear selector will shift our of Park (electronic lock), then your problem is more likely you have a cable problem leading to the transmission (mechanical). Chock the wheels, turn the ignition on but do not start the car and have an assistant move the selector lever through all of the gears and watch the movement of the gear lever on the transmission. You'll have your answer very quickly.
