I have a 2005 Buick Lacrosse 3.8L with 115k miles on it. The serpentine belt broke while I was driving tonight. Upon inspection, the belt had melted which had caused it to break. The coolant pump pulley does not rotate and has a lot of melted belt residue on it, so I believe that means that the pump is broken.

Has anyone replaced one and how involved is the replacement? Have you gotten a shop to replace the part and how much was it to get the work done? My car is probably only worth 3k, so I don't want to spend half it's worth to fix it.

Maybe $300-$500 for pump, belt, antifreeze - depends on what else (hoses?) needs to be replaced once they get in there. What choice do you have - you can't drive it as-is, right?

Thanks for your reply! It was the water pump and I was able to get it replaced for $300. I was very pleased that it didn't cost more!
