Hello, My father is having a problem with his Lucerne and I am hoping to get some advice or ideas. I have not gotten to take a look at it, but he describes the problem as follows: He is able to start the car, but the starter does not disengage and then the car turns off. Our assumption is that the stalling or turning off is a safety feature since the starter is not disengaging. Had this been 30 years ago , I would thin started solenoid first , but these days seems like there could be other problems. Has anyone had this issue and solved the problem. Any advice is very much appreciated.

That's an odd problem. Does his ignition cylinder have a sprang clutch ? You know the kind you only have to turn forward and let go and the starter will not disengage until the engine fires. Kinda like a push button works.

Hi, yes its a the switch works in the traditional way , but you reminded me of the remote start so I called just now to ask him to try the remote start ,but he was outside and had just started the car and it worked. So, we will see how long it continues to operate properly. No check engine light or anything, and I would have liked to have gotten over to hear it for myself to verify what he is hearing and seeing. Thanks for the input I do appreciate it.. Does seem like it is not some known issue that others have seen so, we may need to hit the mechanic if it happens again.

Chances are there codes stored in some of the computers, but the engine light is not on because they're not engine codes. Need to go to a place with a professional scanner than can read all the computers.

Not sure if his VIN# was on the recall list or had it done for the ignition, just another option to look at as the remote start worked. I guess check the number of items on the key ring, I grew up when something less than a 12LB bowling ball was OK to hang off of the key ring, now if it's more than the key you are overweight lol.
