2017 Buick Encore FWD Preferred Mileage (MPG) in cities,

OMG 😲 , Wow , I should probably try to emulate ur driving methods and exact fuel brands , i dont know what else to do , do you mix anything in ur fuel or can u let us know which gas station u use ( costco gas , chevron , shell ? ) , mine is way too low compared to urs 🤔🤔
I am running BP exclusively with the engine. I was using Chevron with our 2015 Encore and it did seem to do as well. I also run the tires between 38-40 PSI cold. I would change your oil way before the indicator tells you. I recommend every 5000 miles and I am using Pennzoil Platinum.

BP as in British Petroleum, my state in USA , California probably doesn’t have any
BP gas stations , I will start using chevron frm today and also penzzoil was recommended by many other buick owners in this thread 👍👍

Sorry, I meant to say that Chevron did not do as well as BP, but you might be different. I think Chevrons around here have the maximum ethanol content allowed. You might want to try Shell too.

If you dont mind , can you let meknow which city/state of USA ur in ?

Here in Ohio, I try to try to stick with Shell Gasoline in my vehicles, and always 89 octane in those that do not require Premium. I never run any fuel lower than 89 octane. And... Yes, I know that 87 is recommended and probably just fine for most of todays vehicles. And... Yes, I know that running higher octane when the manufacturer does not require it is most often a waste of money. But octane is not the purpose of my post and would entail a whole new forum thread... 🙂

Over the years I have done some MPG comparisons between different brands of gasoline.
Shell has always given me the best MPG averages. Sometimes not a big increase and most often negligible at best, depending on the vehicle/engine. But I have had a couple of vehicles that would consistently average 3 mpg or so better with Shell and would also seem to idle and accelerate smoother.

My second choice in gasoline brands is BP (British Petroleum) it is usually a close runner-up to Shell.
Marathon and Chevron also seem to be pretty consistent/good brands.

My preference for Shell started back in the late 80's and early 90's when I drove a hot-rodded, carbureted, Camaro as a daily driver that would also see some occasional drag racing at the local track. That engine always ran the best and gave the best MPG with Shell Premium. On race days I would sometimes add a bottle or 2 of Octane Boost and tweak the tuning a bit.

I like Shell gasoline too, but around here they are significantly more expensive than everybody. Even Chevron and BP are typically less expensive. The Shell stations are not as common as BP, so I imagine that has something to do with it too. Even with their regular rewards program and 20 cents off a gallon bonuses, they still are more expensive!

In my "neighborhood" the price between brands only varies by 1 to 3 cents per gallon, and most of the time are usually the same. My area is heavily commercialized with retail stores/malls/outlets and a lot of gas stations, I think the competition among the stations keep the prices a little more in line. But you are correct that among the many brands, if one is going to be more expensive, it is usually Shell.

Driver and driving style is biggest variable in mpg.

In summertime and hot temps it has been proven that using premium fuel provides better mpg. We exclusively use either Chevron premium or Costco premium fuel. We are very happy with both mileage and performance.

If you drive aggressively in city, the engine controls may be pulling timing to avoid knock. Using premium fuel in this case would see improved mpg and performance.

Other thoughts.

Short trips will see lesser mpg.

Use full synthetic motor oil. Pennzoil platinum dexos is my choice. I buy it at walmart and change oil myself.

Change the air filter.

Run a tankful of Chevron fuel system cleaner.,..

Techron Complete Fuel System Cleaner | Chevron Lubricants

To fully clean off intake valves you can do an Italian tune up - this is running it up to near red line rpm to blow off the intake valves. The Chevron intake cleaner will soften deposits on the intake valves. Running at high rpm after running half tank of injector cleaner will help blow off deposits. Do this once at half tank and again when tank approaches empty. This was suggested to me by a friend of mine who is a senior master tech with 40 years experience.

We have a front wheel drive and purchased it over an AWD for better acceleration and mpg. I think it is a second faster 0-60 and we are seeing 37-40 mpg on highway with premium fuel. That being said, I don't think 24 mpg would be out of line for all city driving with short trips. My wife likes to use the instantaneous mpg readout to help her learn to drive more efficiently. I told her just to drive it to make sure she isn't lugging it etc.

Hi Jeff, Can we use the Chevron Fuel System cleaner, when the vehicle is still In warranty , ? I mean, while it cause any conflict with the terms of warranty , also as I bought a CPO, I don't know the previous driver's style of driving and whether he used top tier fuel or not, I am almost tempted to use the bottle of Techron, but still have slight hesitation, have you used Techron Cleaner on your encore, if so, at how many KMiles were you at ? also there are 2 things in marker, Techron Fuel System cleaner, which you mentioned in your post and another thing called , Techron Fuel Injector cleaner ..

I haven't used in our encore yet as it is less than 8 months old and we just turned over 11k miles. I just bought a bottle of Techron Fuel System cleaner and will use it right before my next oil change. If we were running chevron premium all the time I wouldn't bother with it - but since my wife is also buying costco fuel and occasionally just buys "whatever". I know chevron prides itself on having an excellent additive package - I view chevron to be better than the costco top tier fuel - by how much, I do not know... ;-)

The difference between the 'fuel system cleaner' and "injector cleaner' is the concentration of the cleaner - the "injector cleaner" cleans injector nozzles for better spray pattern and the "fuel system cleaner" is more heavily concentrated to also remove carbon buildup from combustion chamber and intake valves. You want the fuel system cleaner.

There is no impact on your warranty at all. AC Delco (GM part) also sells a fuel system cleaner - it is probably just chevron fuel system cleaner with a different label.

Use it before your next oil change....

Wikipedia page on "italian tune up"...

Again, I will add fuel system cleaner and then do "italian tune up" after using half tank of fuel with cleaner - then again after tank reaches empty (right before refuel). This gives the cleaner time to soften carbon deposits....
