97 Riveria Supercharged
Hello all,
I just recently became a Rivera owner. I have a 97 Riveria with the 3.8 supercharged. At random intervals the engine will just shut off with zero warning. Nothing else is affected power wise. After I let the car sit for about 5 minutes it will fire right back up as if nothing happened. My CEL lights up when I start the car but turns back off after the engine is running so I know that system is working properly and hasn’t detected any issues. The only warning light I have the dash is the “security” light and even that sometimes isn’t on. So I am at a loss of what could be causing my issue. I’ve done a lot of reading on the PASS system and it doesn’t seem like it would shut off the engine just prevent starter from operating. Other things I found would be a crank sensor fault but wouldn’t that trigger a CEL? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Did you ever get this figured out? An old thread but since this is OBD2, I'd suggest looking at live data or snapshots and see if there is a sensor like cam or crank that suddenly loses info. Could also be an ICM fault, that does not typically send any codes, eg the computer has no clue there is a problem. Also check the connections at the battery posts, even though nothing else seems affected power-wise. If you try to restart in less than five minutes, that can be very helpful because live data will show if a sensor is not providing a signal. Also check for spark and fuel pressure during this five minute window. For the CEL it may also store a code but have it as pending and not light the CEL because it does not think it's serious enough, even though in reality it's about as serious as it can get.
