AC/Defroster Moldy Smell SOLUTION

It looks like it is covered, but probably only under the bumper to bumper warranty, not under the powertrain warranty. Depending on the coverage level for an extended warranty a person has, they may or may not cover it.

Thank you! I will give it a shot next time I go in for service. I'm sure I'll have to pay for the filter, which I am fine with.

The cabin filter doesn't remove the odor from the A/C system at startup. If it did then GM wouldn't have to do the deodorizing procedure.

Do you smell it when the heater is on, or just the vents, might be in the air ducts in general, and not just the AC. Try Fresh Air and Recirculated Air see if that also makes a difference.

The odor comes from mold that forms in the ac condenser.

Why does the procedure even need to be done, can't the engineers at GM get it right the first time, out of all the other GM cars I got, this is the first for this procedure. The Part Number listed for the coating 12346391 is $260+(WHAT A JOKE!!) for an Atomizer for a Blowgun and a small 4oz. bottle of Cooling Coil Coating, something you can make for less than $30.00 and bottle of Carb Cleaner < $10.00. I would try replacing the Cabin Filter first, for $41.99 you can get a K&N filter than can be cleaned. OH Yeah!! Clean the Drain tube out as well. Do it to the Sun Roof Drains as too

The oder comes from the evaporator core not the AC condenser, two different parts and two different locations.

I don't have the problem but if someone from the southern US, where humidity and mold are a bigger issue, asked a commercial or residential HVAC service company what they use on a similar problem it's probably off the shelf and a lot cheaper. They have some good non-toxic chemicals for the outside AC coils, good if trying to safely clean aluminium, that won't trash everything else. Just a option to look at, not the same as the GM approach.

I have the issue but ONLY when i run the defrost... I will definitely need to check this out and hopefully will solve the issue. If I run the defrost even for just a minute the smell is so putrid anf can even be smelt from outside the vehicle for up to an hour!! Its harsh and embarassing all at the same time!!

There are replaceable cabin air filters that have a "carbon" element to them that work great.
Also make sure to not leave the system set to recirculate all the time, especially when leaving the car to sit.
The service manual will also tell you it's unhealthy to use the RECIRC setting all the time.
One problem is that the AUTO setting for the a/c I think automatically uses the RECIRC setting so unless you check you won't notice which source is being used.
Check the store for some of the new odor "bombs" available just for cars with this problem.
I haven't ever suffered from this but I have been doing the fresh air thing for shall we say a long time and I do live in the south so there is plenty of humidity.

Thanks for this!! I will definitely give it a go. I knew about the cabin filter but wasnt sure if that would fix the problem as it foesnt put off an odor when i run heat or ac. Only when i defrost the windows. Was planning on replacing it regardless cause im sure its long over due. I will also double check the air source. Hoping it makes a difference cause at this point in the mornings i have 2 choices. Drive thru a fogged up window or show up stinking to high heaven and neither of them is working out well in my book....lol Ty again!!

Just figured I'd share my solution to this problem as many people seem to have it and there wasn't too much definitive info out there, just a bunch of bits and pieces everywhere.
Whenever i would run my AC or defroster in my car, I got a musty/moldy smell. You become immune to it after a while but everyone who rides in my car notices. Dealership just gave me the usual answer of replacing the cabin air filter. I tried this but it did not solve my issue.
After some research, it seemed that the issue was due to mold in my AC evaporator and/or in the hoses for it. I went to NAPA and bought some A/C Pro Auto Air Conditioning Evaporator Odor Eliminator (UPC: 048168025671). It was about $10. It is a foaming cleaner in an aerosol can with a cap/tube attachment. I also purchased a new cabin air filter since youre supposed to replace it when using the AC Evap Cleaner.
The cleaner is simple, spray it through the AC Evap drain tube til it starts to foam back out the end of the tube. There are 2 ways to access the drain tube, from under the car or under the carpeting on the passenger side.
If you access it from underneath the car, you will need to lift the car up to be able to reach the drain tube. it is located almost directly underneath where the shifter is, slightly off to the passenger side. Insert the hose for the cleaner as far as possible and spray it up into there,
I chose to access it from inside the car where it comes through the firewall. To get to it, you need to go thru the passenger side front door. Pull down the carpeting paneling stuff along the side of the center console, starting from the front of the car to the end of the first piece of carpeting. It is pretty easy to pop back into place as it bends so don't worry. There will be a black rubber hose behind there (its the only hose there). You have to roll back the rubber hose from the front to the back after removing the 2 little rubber tabs on the hose. Insert the hose for the foaming cleaner into the part going into the firewall as far as possible and spray the cleaner through. Quickly slide the hose back over the end and re-secure it, you wont need to access this again so you can close it all up while the cleaner sits.
Then you let it sit for about 15 mins (it will begin to drain out the AC evap drain tube out onto the ground almost immediately, so if you don't want it all over your garage floor use a bucket or do it outside!). Then you let your fan run on the lowest setting for 5 minutes (I let it run for 25 mins after that with the system on full blast after that and doors open to get rid of the smell of the cleaner, but it int a bad smell at all).
The final step is to replace your cabin air filter. Open the glove box. There are four screws around the glove box holding it in. After undoing those screws, you can pull the whole glove box assembly right out. Be careful though, there is a light attached to the top of the glove box you need to unplug before you completely remove the glove box. The filter is right there behind a rectangular panel that just unclips and drops down.
I would also recommend having your local dealership turn on the after blower feature on your car if you have this issue, it'll help stop the build up of condensation causing the mold. It just runs the blower fan for a few mins after you turn off your car to dry out the AC Evap. I hope this helps, wish all this was in one thread when I was trying to do mine! I had a faint smell of cleaner for the first day or two. But its been over a month and no more bad smells, just cool air!
Just did it as you described. The hose is difficult to find under the car it comes out in side one of the steel support tubes. Much easier under the passenger side carpet. Worked like a champ and only took me about 20 minutes. Once I found the drain line that is. Much better than paying the dealership 2.5 hrs of labor! Thanks for the post!
