Adding Bluetooth to an older Lucerne

Just an update to adding Bluetooth to a 2006 thru 2010 Lucerne, Impala, Cadillac DTS/CTS etc....
You need Onstar Module # 22739392. Go to "Partshotlines.com", do a search for a 2011 Buick Lucerne, or 2011 Cadillac DTS, (select a part) "body control module", then when the box pops up click on - Communication, (OnStar, opt UE1), voice recognition (opt UPF).
when the search results show up go to the "change location" box, enter YOUR zip code and it will show you salvage yards near you and the part availability and price. (most are between $40 and $80) plus shipping. NOTE: make sure you get the bluetooth antenna with it. (if not they are available for $6.50 on Amazon. P/N 15938939.
The module is behind the rear seat, passenger side. remove carpet covered plastic panel that covers the rear seat (from the trunk side). (2) 10mm nuts hold the module to the brace behind the seat. Unplug the old onstar module, (MAKE SURE YOUR KEY IS OFF AND RETAINED ACCESSORY POWER IS OFF !, leave drivers door open, mount the new module and plug in the 2 white connectors and the 1 black connector. The new module has only 3 connectors, your original Onstar Module had 2 white and 2 black connectors. Plug in only the BLUE wire connector and the bluetooth antenna (the yellow wire the was plugged into the old module is no longer used. Turn key on, press voice button on steering wheel for 2 seconds, radio says ready, say "bluetooth", the say "pair" and connect your cell phone. YOU ARE NOW HANDS FREE!!
NOTE: If you still want Onstar, and you used module #22739392 you can have Onstar update your new module to YOUR CAR.
I don't want Onstar but nice to know that it can still work if i did want to activate it.
Did my 2008 Lucerne and my neighbors 2006 Lucerne and both now have bluetooth and work flawlessly!!

Nice write up, just to add that the VCIM has to compatible with the vehicle so others don't try any Bluetooth VCIM and wonder why it doesn't work.

Thanks for this I have a 2010 Lucerne I couldn’t connect my phone to the car, I’m guessing the original owner didn’t want that hook up so I’ll try this on mine and see if it works.

Hello All,

Today I updated my 2009 Lucerne Super by adding an onstar module from a 2011 Lucerne. Brucep's writeup was very helpful. I will add, however, that my 2009 had five connections, plus the antenna, -- two white connector blocks, one black connector block, and two coaxial-type single-wire connections. These last were color-coded maroon for the larger diameter wire (approx. 0.1 inch) and blue for the smaller single wire. The 2011 onstar module accommodated the white and black connector blocks and the antenna identically, as compared with the 2009 unit. However, there was only one connector port for a single-wire coaxial connection. The good news is that the connector bodies were 'foolproof' in their geometry, such that only the maroon coaxial wire would mate with the 2011 onstar module coaxial-connector shell. Conclusion - the wires may vary in color, but only one will fit the connector shell on the replacement onstar module. I am up and running with full bluetooth capability that does not 'disappear' every time the car is shutdown and restarted.

Pulled a module from an 09 Super at the junkyard and stuck it in my 07 CXS, works great. Only issue I ran into is I could not get the voice prompts to work with the factory nav radio with either this module or my original one. I swapped in the regular radio I had from my old car and the voice prompts work fine.

There are write ups on getting the updated Bluetooth VCIM programed at the GM dealer, Tech2 needed, to the vehicle. Somewhat gray area as GM sent out a notification that instructed dealership not to do the programming, but then again what dealerships actually read the GM notifications LOL. There is a posted step by step instructions on how to do it, again some dealers may say yes but have no clue how to do it, so that may be something to consider and bring in as it may be what's needed to get the sat/nav to work with the Bluetooth VCIM.

I know this pos is an old post. But, i just purchased 2008 Lucerne and want to add bluetooth. Does adding the Onstar Module Only add HF phone calls or can I also stream audio from my phone?

Hi. I am interested In added Bluetooth to newly purchased 2008 Lucerne. If i add the newer Onstar will it only allow HF phone calls or will i be able to stream music from iPhone also? Thanks

Followed this thread and bought a unit from a 2011 DTS, had to pull it out myself....pick-n-pull......added it to my 2008 Lucerne and it works for phone. Can’t get it to work for streaming music. I don’t think it will. I also can’t Get it to recognize my contacts by voice. I have to say the phone number out load, still working on that, suggestions welcomed. Unit was $27 with tax.

Hello all, this thread is excellent. I upgraded my 2008 with the unit out of a 2011 DTS. GOT IT AT pick n pull for $25 plus tax. Same install as Lifewithfather above. I did figure out how to add voice dial and wanted to share it with everyone. First activate using the phone button on steering column. Then say "hands free calling." Then say "store" and it will take you through the procedure. Must have your phone hooked up in Bluetooth and need to add each number individually for some reason. It worked for me. Good luck.

Phone only, unless someone has been able to do otherwise, as it's just a extension of the VCIM phone connection. Unfortunately the stock units are limited to adding Bluetooth unless it's a modification to the aux input or inline on the harness with aftermarket units.

Thanks for the clarification. I always drive older cars and this 2007 is the latest model I've ever had. When I was looking I said to myself that my next car would be new enough to have Bluetooth radio but here we are again. just lucky enough that this car is new enough to have a CD player instead of a cassette LOL.

Even with the sat/nav it has things lacking, but a Bluetooth receiver plugged into the aux to play music is only a minor inconvenience compared to the cassette to 8-track adapters LOL.

Thanks for clarification. Did not realize this is phone only upgrade. Has anyone tried aftermarket music streaming bluetooth add on with any success?

There's aftermarket modules, I believe Crutchfield has them, but from what I remember they get put into the harness in between the radio and some had a separate speaker for the chimes. If it's just music media a Bluetooth receiver plugged into the aux is a quick option and is inexpensive route.

I did look at aftermarket head units but at the time the GM interface cables added a significant cost of the upgrade, so I started out with the Bluetooth in aux as a quick fix.

Sometimes a Bluetooth receiver adapter is all that will work, since these radios have smart AUX inputs, which can mess up badly designed "smart" headphone outputs from phones that still have them.
