The Air Bag rediness light stays on on my son's 2004 Park Avenue. It flashes like it's supposed to on startup, then stays on. According to the owners manual, there is an electrical problem.
I haven't found any more information than that. The fuse under the hood checks out fine.
Any suggestions?

Unless you have your own scan tool, go to Autozone for a free scan of the codes. Write down the info then post again with the code number or numbers. Someone from the group will help you from there.

Resurrection.

Yesterday morning I saw this Air Bag light stay on for the first time in my 96.
Fuse: OK
Codes: none (as expected)
No other relevant issues known, i.e. battery is good, ABS etc. work.
However, the steering horn switch is disconnected and hooked up to a separate switch because of the infamous sticky horn switch issue. Has been for a couple of years, no problems.

Since I am not familiar with the SRS in details and all its sensors involved, any suggestion where I should start?

Thanks, I scanned with my own tool, which seems to cover pretty much everything available. I will check with my preferred workshop if they can do it with their tool.

I must have a self-healing car. 🙄
When I started today (several times in fact) the Air Bag light stayed off after the initial flashing.

I will observe the behavior, next time I am in the workshop I will ask them to scan. I hope that Air Bag codes are stored in the history.

Hopefully it's stored otherwise it's chasing a phantom problem as there isn't any single fail point.

Just a quick update. No codes to read.
So far, Airbag light did not reappear (as in, remaining on after flashing).
So, no action for now.

The airbag light should do an initialization at key on which may include flashing but if it goes out you should be good.

That's exactly what happens. Until one recebt day, the light stayed on. But any day after that, it again behaves as it should. Hence, just observing for now. 🙂

If you havent removed battery power, your SDM should still have a fault code logged in it you can read with a high end tool. they should be 2 digit codes

Actually, im not so confident on my last answer. Do you have service data for a 96 by chance? Because I am actually not sure if SIR/SDM codes are read through the OBD2 port or if its a flash and count procedure in 96 yet. The push to use the port to read all systems codes was obvious in 97 with park avenue with the HVAC codes still able to be read without a reader, but the 94-96 GM cars I am not so certain on. The SDM is in charge of diagnostics and its unclear how you interface with it, and service data online is kinda shit for a 1st gen park avenue let alone a unicorn 96 park avenue and 96-99 lesabre. bonneville is probably same situation, olds 88/98 cars probably as well.

We tried reading codes through OBD interface with three different readers, none of them shows menue entries (let alone codes) for SRS (or HVAC, for example). Thus I concluded that Airbag controller is not hooked up to OBD and therefore no fault codes.
(Although, we do not have access to a Tech2.)

I decided to leave this resting until it reoccurs, after all it goes through its normal test sequence now.
