Replaced battery today

First car with a volt gauge for me

When driving will show 14.2-14.5
But when ass kicks in drops to 12

Did I get an old battery that need to charge up
Or was a bad original battery a symptom of another problem?

I put about 12 miles this far.

Just like our electronics, replacement batteries are not stored at 100% charge before being put in the cars.
And that tend to go down as the battery is sitting on the shelf.
14.2 to 14.5 volts means the alternator is charging it up and since you have the ASS kicked in, that sounds like the battery is decently charged, otherwise that won't even happen.

Test it with a multimeter

When ASS is activated you are reading static voltage. 12 is good.
When running you are reading alternator charging as well.
You are good to go.

Get rid of the ASS, and sleep better at night.

When I start up the car the battery is showing 13v and slowly creeps up but not right away.

Is that right?

Yes, but again use a handheld multimeter for accurate information

It's doing fine. Charging voltage is programmed to keep that agm battery in good shape. Charging current is most likely pretty low.

Most modern cars have some logic to evaluate the battery condition and only charge when needed. Its not the constant charge of old, plain alternators from years ago. So you may see 12 when driving as well if the system is not actively charging. Then it jumps to low 14s when charging. This keeps the AGM battery lasting longer in theory. It also means people may get unnecessarily worried if the battery voltage info in the DIC varies and they were thinking it should always be constant.

They do the same kind of "smoothing" trick with the temperature gauges on modern cars. The temp gauge on my old Triumph is quite variable. But that's just how engines operate.

and that's what info i would prefer to be getting from my vehicle's temperature gauge.

Three months into the new battery.
No issues to report.

Starts up every time.

If you put in the GS cluster with the pocket gauges enabled the oil temp gauge gives that kind of data.

If you don't want to upgrade to the GS cluster check out oplmonitor.eu

ODB2 dongle, iPhone or Android application needed.

coolant temp?

That allows you to change the instrument cluster display using an app on your phone via a ODB2 dongle?
I'll check it out - there's a lot of linking/reading @ that website for an old guy to navigate to figure out what to get & how to use it 🤔

On the non GS Essence cluster red needle you can see the following information

Oil Presssure
Oil Temp
Coolant Temp
Transmission Fluid Temp
Volts
trip A along with mpg
trip B along with mpg
trip timer
tire pressure

I think the following:
7500 mile maintenance countdown
total galons used
several various MPG related screens
0-60 mph in seconds
average speed
G force Y

The turbo gauge does not work, shows zero %

You use the ODB2 dongle to connect to the car and interface with your phone.
The app on your phone uploads new screen options to your instrument cluster.

You go through the same process to enable/disable screens and scroll through screens on the DIC as before.
Once programmed, you can disconnect the ODB dongle.

The app is modular and has options for various cars. The site also lists several ODB adapters they recommend based on the specific car you have.
Other cars this app can do other features.
