Considering a TourX, whats the state of mods and reliability?

looking for my first Regal TourX
Hi Everyone,

I have always appreciated the TourX since it first came out. I love the LTG engine in general as I know its solid and can respond well to mods. I am looking to upgrade from my Cruze Hatchback and feel this will fit the bill, but it seems hard to find much info on mods or reliability.

My plan would be to swap over my Flexfuel sensor and GFB DV from my Cruze (they use the same DV and same ECM) get a trifecta tune pretty quickly after getting a car, and getting a set of winter tires.

Searching makes it seem like the rear Diffs are a bit weak?

What about the Transmissions, are they known to have substantial failure?

Can the suspension for the GS be swapped over for a little bit tighter driving experience? If not, any other options (not looking for coilovers, just looking for a slightly more sporty experience)?
I would be looking for a complete spring/shock and sway bar upgrade that is actually tuned to the car, much like a GM Performance parts setup that has been offered on other cars?

It looks like the GS brakes can be swapped over which is something I definitely would like to do down the road.

Any other big problem areas other than lack of parts that are wagon specific?

I really like the idea of the TourX, just wish it was a bit more sporty.
 
Trifecta does tunes for the Regal - I'd say find a GS if you want a GS because they are different enough.
 
So I am really looking for the functionality of the tourx, I would take it over the gs as I need that wagon body and I actually prefer the LTG. So I could be content with the stock suspension but I also like to tinker so I was wondering if the GS suspension bolted up, which I would imagine it does?
 
Regarding the functionality of the TourX, I'd say real good. My days of tinkering with a vehicle are behind me, so I will not comment on that aspect of this vehicle.
Had ours since new, now has about 60k mi. on it. No mods done to this vehicle.

Also had mine since new and would totally recommend as a day to day. I have not personally done the Trifecta because it's honestly been great and drives great.
I'd recommend no pano/sunroof (reduces complexity) and essence trim for what's included.
 
Thanks for the feedback! I agree that it seems like a solid car without any modding, and I know I wouldn’t jump right into those things, but I know I will eventually get the itch….

Glad to hear it’s as functional as I am hoping, my little Cruze hatch is surprisingly functional for my family so I don’t want to take a step back, and the tourx is about the only car in my price range that keeps the function without being a midsize SUV.
And thanks for the heads up on the moonroof/essence trim. I do hope to get an essence if possible, pickings are generally slim so I might have to be flexible with what I can get trim-wise
 
Overall pretty solid. 1st owner Have 135k miles on mine. No engine or transmission issues. Biggest thing was sunshade on sunroof and the front suspension tsb.

Otherwise roomy and solid. Once the engine gets going it starts moving quicker than you think. Have trifecta tune and does drive a bit more aggressively on the shifting. Very happy and having a hard time what I'd change to after 🙁
 
So after a bit more deep research, I found that it seems the tourx and the GS share much of the same suspension. As in, the same sway bars front and rear, and same rear springs. It looks like the front spring is slightly stiffer in the GS to offset the slightly higher weight of the LGX engine but they probably are effectively nearly the same spring rate. The GS just has the more focused shock tuning which is not really transferable as it runs its own magnetic shocks. All that and I bet there is minimal difference in driving feel between the two other than the bit more weight and weight distribution on the tourx and the regular all seasons it has. A bit of a bummer but not a deal killer as I definitely can appreciate the smooth ride this would offer.

I am definitely still interested in one of these. It also seems the rear diff is the same part between the GS and tourx? They both run the 5 link suspension in the back as compared to the base regal getting a 4 link. So it seems the tourx is already more or less using the top parts that GM offered for this platform. I can’t imagine the Malibu would have any better parts to swap over (they share the same E2xx sedan chassis) or even the loosely related Cadillac XTS which, to my knowledge, was a modified e2xx to become the P1xx.

So upgrading to the gs brakes, tune seem to be all that is really out there, which should be enough as this car is no slouch but also not meant to be a race car either.

Still uneasy about the rear diff reliability as it seems GM was putting in some weak diffs for a while (the ATS and CTS are know to fail here often).

I'd say the Regal sixth gen is a pretty well proven platform at this point. No car is going to be perfect but the perfect car is a wagon. 😉
 
I've owned my 2018 TourX since new. About 80k miles now and completely stock. Power and fuel economy are reasonable. My biggest complaints are the saggy rear suspension under load and the start-stop "feature".

Mechanically, the LTG engine and Aisin 8 speed automatic are reliable units.

I have a moonroof, and it has failed twice. Once under warranty, once right after warranty (GM covered 50% of the cost as a goodwill gesture). I agree with the comment about finding one without the moonroof.

There are not many options left for wagons in the US. At some point, when I get rid of mine, I will probably go with the Volvo V90.
