Recently my 2005 Rendezvous started missing and it got worse quickly. My first thought was a clogged fuel filter or water in the gas. I replaced the fuel filter, but this had no effect AND a check engine light came on. I stopped at a parts store where they plugged it into their diagnostic box. It showed the code for crankshaft position sensor. They did not reset and clear the codes, but sold to me a $45 sensor. Once home my neighbor used his diagnostic box to clear the code, but after a two mile test drive it was bucking like a horse again.
Once I removed the right front tire and removed that plastic shield, I was looking directly at the crankshaft wheel. I could also see the general outline of the sensor. Both were caked with oily dirt. I decided to clean them off before going to the trouble of pulling the wheel. I sprayed it down with degreaser then blasted it with the water hose. I then bumped the ignition so that the crank wheel would change position. I repeated the degreaser and water blast. I then cranked her up and help it at 2000 rpms for about 20 seconds. All clear. I put the tire back on and it has been working fine ever since.
I returned the sensor to the parts store where I traded it for a set of plugs.
Hope this works for you.
Good luck.
