Dexron V1 ATF - OEM? - Safe to use other brand with correct specs?

Just go to walmart or Oriellys and get Dexron 6 and be done with it. Its backwards compatible in all gm trans.

I like this! Makes sense to me. Why NOT use the update fluid? At this point, I don't see why it would hurt to top-off my transmission with the VI fluid...

The real question is.... Can I use a VI "spec" fluid from another vendor (Maxlife for example) since it's readily available and meets specs on the fluid.

I'm staying away from any "High Mileage" stuff as I don't need this. From the posts in this thread, I'm sure it won't hurt anything...

I can always seek-out the AC DELCO DEXRON VI by itself and that's okay also... I was just concerned about the different chemistries etc.

Yes...yes..... Waaaayyyy overthinking this for sure. 🤔
dexron VI, as Ive said, is policed by GM. Anything bearing that needs to meet GMs approval.

DEXRON III is not policed, anything bearing its Name could be nothing remotely similar whatsoever. Or the same stuff.
GM produces dexron III still, its been named in my last post. If you want Dexron III, buy that. If you want Dexron VI, get a quality Dex VI and use it. I support this plan.

My local oreillys has Dex 3. Nobody else does, as they just carry dex 6. Ive switched to synthetics in my old cars, and a leak developed where there were never any leaks before. Perhaps the new oil had an additive or something that had an effect, or maybe the new oil caused it, or maybe it was a coincidence, but if i have an old car, i just try to keep whatever was in there, dex 3 from oreilys for me.

They clean. Dex 6 cleans the system more than conventional. Its bad if you have a lot of gum and varnish inside already. but not if its in good shape.

They do not carry Dex 3. no one does. By that name. By that name, anyone can sell any product they want and slap dex 3 on the label.

GM (Ac delco) carry "dex 3" chemically as in, the same stuff, but they sell it under "Manual Transmission and Transfer Case Fluid" and its in 32 oz bottles I think.

SImple as that. Does the fluid you buy work/is similar/is fine? probably
but its not dex 3. just like Mercon is not sold anymore ANYWhere. yet its on bottles. Mercon V(5) and LV(not 55, but Low Viscosity) are sold by Ford tho. Gm still sells Dex VI

If made by others
anything claiming to be on the bottle has to meet specs/approval by GM
