Getting ready to put in new outside handle on 1997 park ave. what is the best way to get the rod out of the hole that is in the photo toward the left side? This pic shows it out already.....

You pic is too small to see it but I will venture a guess that what you are asking is how to get the rod that attaches to the latch(an opens the door) and not the one that goes from the lock?

If so then do the following

First remove the two nuts that hold the door handle to the door. Then gently pull the handle assembly up so you can see the rod.

If you look closely then you will see the rod looks like it goes into a plastic clip/sleeve. This sleeve attaches to the rod with a clip on the rod. Push on the clip part and swing it upwards and pull the rod out of the hole. Once that is done you can pull the handle out.

Take your time on this as it is a pain the first time

Here is a better pic of the hole. When the rod tip is in the hole it seems to be held by a one way plastic clip

I got the handle switched out but it still does not work. Inside handle does and I noted that the linkage shown in the pic goes down when pulling handle. When pulling outside handle the vertical rod also pushes the same linkage down but does not allow the door to open! What could I be missing?
