I have a 2000 Lesabre Limited and have 87k miles. I suspect the PS fluid has never been changed based on the color of it. I did the turkey baster exchange with a quart of lubeguard PS fluid and the color is still dark and dirty. Is there a method to pull off the return hose somehow? If I could reach in there and pull out the hose and connect it with a double male barbed 3/8" fitting to a longer hose into a bucket I could flush it but I can't see a way to reach the hose clamp and hose on the back of the pump. Can anyone confirm that this is possible and advise on how to do it please?

  1. Lift both front wheels just high enough to be off the ground. You will not need to be under the car.
  2. Use the baster to remove as much fluid as you can.
  3. With the engine off, turn the wheels fully one way, use the baster to remove the fluid.
  4. Turn them all the way the other way and remove the fluid.
  5. Repeat turning back and forth until you get as much fluid as you can.
  6. Fill reservoir, start engine and turn it back off right away. The intent is to just barely pump what's there into the hoses and rack.
  7. Repeat filling and bumping engine until the level does not change.
  8. Start engine and cycle the wheels back and forth, watching the fluid level. Fill as needed.
When I did this to my Malibu years ago, it really improved the steering. I used Lucas PS Fluid with Conditioners. Later, I helped a friend who had a Malibu as well and he remarked how much better the steering was for him as well. Both of said that it felt smoother, less "crunchy".

Thanks your write up is quite different than the method I did. I would use a turkey baster to remove the fluid and refill and turn engine on to mix fluid then repeat. I did this with a quart and didn't effect much it's still dark colored

The method I learned from Chris Fix worked great because it replaces almost all of the fluid. Very little left to discolor the new fluid.

I tried it today and got quite a bit out on the first try maybe 1/3 qt. I will be doing it again when I get my lubeguard power steering fluid protect any from Amazon. Thanks for the help. I thought I'd have to pull the hose somehow and it seems impossible to do.
