A few months ago I bought a ‘98 Le Sabre and about a few days ago the odometer got stuck at 110000 and the trip odometer stopped counting as well. I searched on what limited information is on the internet about this and I found out it could be the gear behind the odometer or the speed sensor. However, both of those are not the case. The gear still turns when i take the instrument cluster apart and spin it, it still counts miles and the speedometer still works so it’s more than likely not the speed sensor or the gear I mentioned.

I’m wondering and asking for any help/advice anyone has to offer as I want to fix the odometer but I’ve reached a dead end on any information.

Just Remember:
- The Odometer gear still turns, only manually though not when I’m driving
- The Speedometer still works and so does everything on the instrument cluster BUT the odometer and tripodometer.

There is a motor connected to the odometer gear inside the instrument cluster but I can’t find this part anywhere online or anyone talking about it.

I’ve considered buying a new instrument cluster, but I just want to see if anyone has any advice for this problem before I buy a new one, and if this happens again I’d like to know how to fix it.

Any help is appreciated !

I have a 1997 Lesabre, and I have opened other speedos but not this one.

The odometer gears will be driven by the speedo cable right where it enters the assembly. The first input gear is probably slipping on the input shaft. The gear could be cracked from shrinkage, or it could just be free-wheeling on the shaft. Sometimes a good epoxy repair will fix it.

The device on the odometer might be a counter, not a motor.

An electronic circuit operates the speedometer. The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS), located in the transaxle, generates an ac voltage with a frequency proportional to the speed of the vehicle. The voltage goes to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and then to the speedometer circuit board in the instrument cluster. The solid state unit drives the pointer of the speedometer.

The same buffered speed signal from the PCM is processed by the speedometer circuit board in order to drive the odometer. The odometers are operated by a stepper motor that responds to pulses from the speedometer circuit.

I've got an 89 buick lesabre custom and mine has stuck on me twice. I would usually trip the speedometer and they would both start working again...

How do you go about tripping the speedometer?

A button that extends out of the bottom of the dash cluster. You may have to press it several times to get it to reset to 0 miles traveled. When cars get old, they get lazy, just like humans!
