2000 Le Sabre would start only when it felt like it. When the radio wouldn't come on I knew I had a no start. Other things that wouldn't work on the no start were: remote, door locks, windows, fuel gauge. Other stuff would work-like the power seat & blower motor.
I checked all the fuses on both boxes (under hood & under rear seat)--they all checked out good--getting voltage at both posts. Tried changing out the relay for starting--no go.
I went after the grounds--all of them. I have a service manual and it does a good job of showing them. Under hood, under seats--opened them up and cleaned the contacts on the 6 & 12 pin grounding connectors as well as the bolt on grommet. Starter grounds as well. Got about 25 starts out of her and then NO START!!
Noticed that my code reader (Actron CP9580A) wouldn't read when I had a no start. There are only 4 wires to check. 2-grounds, 1-12 volt and a communication wire. The grounds and hot worked fine that brought me to the Class 2 Serial Data--COMMUNICATION WIRE-AGAIN-this is the third time on this car. The first (2 years ago) was the wire connector under the drivers seat (beat to death on this and other sites). Last year it was the Drivers Door Module (I keep a couple of junk yard spares in my module box at all times). This is the first time it has affected starting.
The service manual has a whole page for the Class 2 Serial Data wires. They allow all of the modules (PCM, DDM, RIM etc.) to talk to one another. If they don't communicate you have problems. The wire is the same to all the modules PPL (purple) and circuit 1807. I planned on tracing each one to look for a break, but, got lazy and threw a couple of modules at it first.
Each module is full of chips that can go bad--open one up and take a look.
I tried the module behind the glove box first (Dash Integration Module). Wouldn't start and it LOC (locked) up the radio--part of the radio theft deterrent. Put the old one back in.
Lets try the Rear Integration Module (behind the rear seat back-drivers side). IT STARTED!!!!
Tested starting the car 12 times in the AM and 12 times in the PM. I had 5 different routes that I ran the car thru with each start. Some on the road and some thru the field (shaker test).
After 90-100 starts I felt pretty confident. Been on the road for 2 weeks without a NO Start.
We're at 144k miles and riding in Le Sabre Style again!
Oh, ya, I picked up 2 more Rear Integration Modules at the junk yard last week.
I've also used a Rear Integration Module to fix a NO AIR COMPRESSOR on the automatic level control. Sorry about being so wordy--it was hard for me to summarize 2 weeks of work.
