On my 99 regal my key gets stuck in the igntion some times. i have to play with the shifter to eventually get it to release. does any one know what causes this problem and what parts do i need to fix it. thanx
Mike-

I've seen this on non-GM cars, but it should be the same.

The transmission gets stuck in R or N. I suggest that when it happens, turn the ignition on, put the vehicle in N then slowly go into R then slowly go into P.

check out the shifter solenoid which is under the console shifter - it is not recognizing that your car is in park - therefore the key will not come out - it's like shutting off the car in drive (D) - I believe the part is a few/couple hundred dollars - I hope this helps.

Dude this post was from 2005!! What are you exact problems and what year make and model vehicle do you have as that will help answer your question.

Its a 2002 regal and the shifter solenoid is bad, i cant get the key out all the time unless i play with the shifter. So i was wondering if there was a way to bypass the solenoid. thats it
and i know on alot of outer forums people conplain when you dont search so i thought i would bring this back to life.

Well what I ended up doing on my 99 regal was to take apart the steering column and physically remove the solonoid that retains the key in the ignition since mine was faulty. The only downside to this, which didn't bother me was that the key can be pulled out while the car is running. Again that was not a problem to me sicne most older cars are that way from the factory. The solonoid is located above the ignition switch under the steering column plastic covers. Hope this helps!
