This will happen to everyone eventually if they never replace the transmission fluid. In the owners manual, GM doesn't recommend fluid replacement unless the vehicle is used in "severe service" ...which is just stupid. The fluid should be changed at least every 50-60,000 miles in my opinion if you want your transmission to last awhile. Ask any seasoned competent mechanic they will say the same. My transmission fluid cooler behind the front bumper has severely dented fins from road debris, so the cooler does not cool as well...so I will be doing this fluid change every 40,000 miles. My last vehicle developed somewhat regular tranny problems due to excessive fluid temperatures in the transmission (a software change from Acura addressing this never got put in the car) so i had to change the fluid fairly frequently.... and the tranny finally died at about 220,00 miles
It is questionable if they would cover that under warranty. I just had mine done today and they covered it but I did make some derogatory comments to the service advisor about how Buick doesn't recommend fluid changes from time to time, I said it was dumb. Initially he said it would not be covered as it was out of the basic warranty period. But the powertrain warranty had not expired yet on mine, soooo...
