1998 lesabre
Hi all! 98 lesabre.about 3_4 years ago,I got one,with111,700 miles on it. Too my knowledge,atf was never done.might have once,..looked at tranny fluid dipstick.it didn't smell burnt. It's turning grey though,it appears.their is a metal n oise,sometimes,shifting in reverse,it's hard,hesitates,but does egage,making a clunky high pitch think noise.it rides fine.ha s 139,000 milesnow.it was in bad shape when I got it.replace a lot on it.
.I read,it uses D exron 3. But see others using dexron 5 now.which should I use? I suspect it did have a grant service at one point.I
Reason...I had 98 Corolla before this car.dad's car he boughthe left me.had 55,000 on it when I got it. 98,000 miles when I did flush myself.jacked car up,took return line off,bucket..turned car on,sputtered after a quart, turned off.put new fluid in. Don't remember what I put in.Castrol atf or supertech.the stuff that came out..it looked like, water, black, grey, nasty colors! I knrw,it is as prob a mistake.that's what was holding everything together in thier.
So!after 4 days or a week,driving close too home,got humid night..car violently jerks stops,jerks,stops many times.stopped.had gas pedal floored,no movement.bands went.so a mechanic told me.granny was toast.took me 57 minutes,pushing it home.hot humid night,and 2 a hole roommates giving me a hard time!
So..is a flush recommended,my case? It's only slightly grey, but the red color is almost gone. or filter and pan?change 6.5 quarts? ok,or use,supertech/ napa dexron 3? Or 5?

DO NOT EVER FLUSH. Drop the pan and change the filter. In preparation for the pan drop I would suggest doing what I did. I ordered a new tranny pan from Amazon equipped with a drain plug as it makes subsequent pan drops much less messy. Use Dexron 3 or equivalent.

Ah ok!I kinda felt the flush was not a good idea!..so,not ok to do Maxlife atf?

I would use Amsoil but in your case who knows if it's a day late and a dollar short. Dex III only and no flush ever, only thing might be to drop the pan again in 2 or 3 months and replace the filter again with new fluid same as used the first time in order that at least 80-90% of it gets replaced. GM "recommends" the newer fluids to supersede the old ones but how many older GM cars do you really see on the road?

I want to do it myself..but landlord not gunn a like I'm doing that,in street.know a mechanic I can go to.
