Newbie to the forum. My daughter’s first car and have only had a few months, ~160k. Check engine comes on and starts dieseling. Showing P0172. For the life of me I cannot find the specs for this vehicle anywhere. The fuel rail pressure is showing 465.5 psi, this seems awfully high, but without a range to be found I’m left reaching out for help. Any tips or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

I'm going to suggest changing out the high pressure fuel pump as it is a very common issue on these cars. I also had the same problem and replacing the HPFP fixed it for me.. It's a easy part to switch out yourself and there are videos you can find on Youtube.

Thank you, I appreciate your input. I started leaning this way as it seems to be the most consistent resolution for most.

No problem, don't forget to change your oil after as the issue involves gas leaking from the HPFP into the crankcase.

If you have the same 2.4L engine as the Buick LaCrosse, the HPFP is known for internal leaks. Buy GM OEM replacement (check service manual for Verano specifics as they may differ from our LaCrosse comments below! ):

- The metal hose for the HPFP is one-time use and needs to be replaced. Get GM OEM

- Inspect the roller assembly that powers the HPFP. These wear and some complained about this part. At your mileage I would just replace that too as it inexpensive. We oiled it before inserting into engine.

- The crank should be moved manually so roller assembly is at proper depth before installing HPFP. Service manual will have details.

- Change oil & filter.

- Change oil & filter.
Good details & correct

Hey! Did you ever fix this problem? I have the same one and am thinking its the HFPP. Would love to know what you figured out.
Yes, it was the HPFP leaking into the crankcase. I switched it out and it fixed the issue.. Make sure to do a oil change after.

All right fix that seems to help the issue. I’ve had the car for about two years or a year and a half now. Do you ever notice it has like a little pole back like say your foots off the gas and it kind of pulls back? I also noticed in first and second gear that it can kind of seem like it works hard to get into those ones. I’m just wondering if it’s this Eco tech engine. I’ve seen other people say the same things and then I looked at your history and so you really take care of it know a lot so I thought I’d ask you a couple questions if you have time.

Yes, it seems to be normal with these cars and I've seen other GM's act the same way.

What were some of the symptons of your pcv orfice being clogged. I swear thats what my problem is but no one believes me. I feel like my car doesn’t breathe. Which is why i notice oil around the dipstick sometimes. I think its building up pressure inside. Ugh. This is a hard car lol

Oil would get sucked into the air cleaner duct and eventually would get into the engine air filter. It would then cause a code to pop up over time for a rich/lean issue. So that would be increasing the oil consumption. If i recall correctly, you could check it by disconnecting the pcv hose from the cleaner duct and put your thumb over it, while it's still connected to the crankcase. If it's clogged, it would be sucking in instead of blowing out. It's been awhile since I fixed it so I don't remember all the symptoms. I think it cause a little bit of a rough idle randomly, here and there. The main worry about it was.. if enough pressure built up, it would crack some parts which equals no oil, then a destroyed engine.

Thanks for your reply. Sorry for getting back so late really appreciate it. Did you ever notice an egg like smell from your exhaust when this is happening or did you ever realize a very, very small shake that happened randomly ever so often when going from like 1st to 2nd

I don't recall ever getting a egg smell but the random small shake I still get to this day. No idea what it's from..
