I have a 2010 CXS and I have noticed in the last few months that whenever I fill the gas tank, just before the nozzle is about to shut off there is a popping sound emanating from the tank or below the car.

Anybody else get this sound or know what it might be?

This is interesting. Have you seen my thread on popping noise? Does the pop sound like you have run over an empty carton or like the popping sound that you would make with your mouth by sucking in?
Although I only heard the noise when I was driving, your problem like mine could be with the fuel tank. I have not heard the noise since the new fuel tank was installed and I cannot tell you how glad I am that I no longer hear it.

I had seen your thread but I have never heard the sound while driving - yes it does sound like you have run over an empty carton.

The next time you fill it up have the service manger or tech go with you so that you can make certain that they hear it. It sounds to me that even though you do not hear it while driving it may be the same problem.

Good Luck.........

I haven't heard that sound but I was thinking as to what the cause could be. It likely isn't coming from inside the tank as I don't suspect it would carry outside. I also don't think it's that heat-based pop I used to get when the car was new (that went away years ago). What I wonder is, could it be related to the weight of the fuel in the tank? As in, could the weight of the full tank be putting stress on some weld or connection point, and thus you only hear it as you've got the tank almost full. Do you also hear it as you go over bumps with a full tank?

Just a theory.

According to my service department there is something inside the tank that will make the popping sound that can be heard. They first thought the car had a dual tank, the noise would than be caused by the unit that allows the transfer of the fuel. There is a TSB out on this for dual fuel tanks.
They found out that the LaCrosse does not have a dual fuel tank and stated that my LaCrosse was the first with a single tank that exhibited this problem, it was documented and Buick Tech Support had the service department to: check body mounts and heat shields test evaporitive system, check all lines and purge all lines, check fuel cap vent and removed and instal new fuel tank. I think there is an evaporator unit that sits down in the tank, this may have been the problem. I pulled up a picture of the fuel tank and it shows a part that seats down into the tank.
I am only saying it is possible that Max could have the same issue and I want to correct the assumption that it is unlikely that any noise could be heard from inside the tank. It is also possible that this pop could also be the from the weight of the tank when full placing stress on the support straps.
In that Max stated that the sound is much like I stated, the sound is not of stress on metal but more of something that you would hear from some sort of mechanical part.
The new fuel tank seem to have solved my problem as it has been a week now and no noise. My advice is that he take it to the dealer but it makes it nice when you can go in armed with helpful information from this forum.

I totally agree. This forum is very valuable when it comes to troubleshooting a problem. I would never have guessed there was anything inside the tank other than fuel and possibly a filter. Appreciate the detail you put into the message. If I start hearing these noises (my car is about as old as Mad Max's) I'll know where to turn.

I can't be 100% sure where the sound is coming from, I will try to pay more attention next time...it does sound like it is coming from inside the tank but you would expect it to be a bit more muffled...I never hear the sound aside from when I am filling it up at the gas station.

I am not concerned about the sound unless something is going to break once my four year warranty is over.

I will talk to my service advisor and hopefully he has heard of the TSB - thanks for the input

I have an 2014 regal gs fwd . I have also starting hearing a loud pop noise when only filling the fuel tank. It will only happen when the tank is just about to be full. Has anyone found the cause? Thanks
