Steel wheel for dog dish hub cap?

Not that I agree with him or anything, but interestingly enough, the current issue of Hemmings Classic Car has an op-ed piece discussing how when they were originally available, the dog dish hubcaps indicated the owner was either frugal or unable to afford full covers -- they weren't something people wanted on their cars. Obvious the writer was an "old-timer" because he was pretty adamant about it!

The rim has to be specifically formed to accept a dog dish (protrusions on the rim that hold the dog dish on by friction).

Some 1980's Caprice rims had them (I had a 81 with dog dishes), but I can't say all did. Of course, those rims won't fit a 91-96, but since I've seen 80's Caprices converted to the 91-96 bolt pattern, it should be possible to go the other way.

Dog dishes would be ideal for winter wheels, but they aren't made for them (I've tried).

Yup they were called Poverty Caps. Supposedly that was a mark of shame in the 1940-1960's that you could not afford full caps.

I guess the closest analogy nowadays is having hubcaps instead of alloy wheels.

Of course the oldtimers thought you arrived if you had a car with wire wheel hubcaps and yet most folks nowadays hate those things(my century came with them and they lasted until the next trash collection day and I pitched them

I remember, you could get the dog dish caps up to the early 1990's on S-10 pickups and those Chevy/GMC work vans. To keep them on you need wheels with raised hubs to allow them to clip on

The Chevy/GMC work vans with the 5x5 bolt pattern would be the best bet for a set of rings that a dog dish hub caps hook to.

There is nothing wrong with them at all.

a poverty cap and trim rings make a car stand out.

I got my first live on person glimpse of the 2012 VW Beetle and not only does it look good(much better then that chicky New Beetle that it replaces) with the way it looks like the original but it brings back the old school VW dog dish caps which i think is pretty cool

I have a variant of poverty caps on my Roadmasters. I plan on doing this setup on my wagon.
