Stop/start

I have an opportunity to purchase a 2018 Encore (direct injection engine with start/stop). Never driven a car with the s/s feature before. What I'm wondering is, if I am the type of driver who ALWAYS has his a/c on-- and set to manual fan level settings, not AUTO-- will this habit of mine automatically override the s/s feature? My understanding is that if the a/c is constantly running it will not permit s/s to occur. AUTO a/c setting cycles on and off, which would give the s/s opportunities to engage. But since I am always running the fan at constant temp, I'm guessing the a/c will override the s/s? Anyone have experience with this specifically with the Encore?

This is the GX forum but my s/s feature occasionally will turn the engine off with the AC on. It won't blow quite as cold during that time but when the car need to turn the engine back on it will. But like I said before I'm speaking for an Encore GX 2021

Thanks for the reply! My mistake on posting to the wrong forum. If okay with the mod, I will re-post in the Encore (non-GX) forum.

I've had the same experience in our 2019 TourX. Our new 2022 GX likely does the same, I haven't run the GX much yet to verify, but I expect the same. There are many variables the computers look at to determine when ASS activates - AC is a major factor, but not the only one

I don't mind the actual start stop feature, but I hate it's timing! So, so many times I am releasing the brake just as the car is turning off. Then I have to wait for it to turn off, and then on again. When I first got it too, I did not allow enough time for it to start. So I would go from brake to gas and it would make an awful, loud, clunking noise because it hadn't fully started by the time I put my foot on the gas.

It's an extra step that I have to consciously think about each time I stop. Stop. Wait for it to stop, then take foot off. Wait for car to start. Then touch gas. So many steps as compared to brake, release, gas.

6 Months with the auto stop module and no problems. I did remove it to get a oil change at the dealer to avoid any conflict that could arise. Takes about 3 minutes to remove or install. Still pleased with it.

start stop is a psy-op to make you buy cars more often

Most wear occurs at startup
I dont want to sound scornful but do that math
Its pennies in your pocket maybe technically but its $$$$$$$ in GMs money bags

What you aren't taking into account is the engineering differences in Auto Stop engines vs traditional. One thing to note from the article below is that it's cold starts that are harder on your engine. Warm starts really don't hurt a thing because oil is already coating the cylinder walls. Auto-Start has been around for a long time. And there are lots of modern vehicles on the road that have Auto Start with 100k+ miles and more on them.

Here's some manufacturers that use Auto Stop, GM, Ford, Range Rover, Honda, Mercedes Benz, Jaguar, Jeep, Chrysler, Volvo, Hyundai, Audi, Toyota, and Fiat.

GM, Land Rover, Audi, Fiat, Hyundai, Toyota, and Volvo mostly use the same supplier, Denso.

Does Auto Stop-Start Technology Wear Out Engine Components?

My Daughter had to replace two starters and a Fly wheel ! Start stop is the worst garbage!

Sometimes the motor stops and starts nearly instantly when shifting from drive to park. I've had it clang on the fly wheel a couple of times, especially from drive to reverse. Tell her to shift into neutral first for a second, then the desired gear. That gives it a chance to restart without hitting the flywheel. My wife's 2016 has 72 miles and no issues. My 2019 Terrain Denali has 52k and no issues. When I bough my Denali, the dealer even told me to shift into neutral first. We had already been doing that with the Encore.

Do we know if this item works on the 2024's?

A company called 4D Tech, Inc. has a little module that plugs in under the console that will eliminate the Stop Start system. See the video on YouTube, easy installation. If you actually want the SS system back on you can push the @ button and the SS system works again. Otherwise you don't have to push the button every time you start up which I find very annoying. The cost is $99 but much less if you order a second one for another car which I did for my wife's Sportage. I worry about the starter and battery but mainly I just don't like the engine being off and trying to enter traffic on a busy street. Check it out on YouTube.

how dare you!! 😉 It's just starting a new habit - push a button and start/stop is disabled. Its right next to the 'half to turn AWD on or FWD' button

its become such a habit in our AO TourX disabling ASS via the shift-control when needed, that I have to think about using the button when we're using the Admiral's Encore GX
