1989 buick regal 2.8 (240000km)

Recently there has been a steady rattling noise coming from what
seems to be the lower area of the engine.
When the engine is cold the sound is more
noticeable. It almost sounds like somthing spinning (grinding). When it
warms up the sound is a steady tapping noise. One mechanic said that it is likely lifters but I seem to think the sound is coming from the bottom.
I'm wondering if I should start by taking off the oil pan to check my theory or to remove the manifold and replace the lifters...

its a 2.8 with that many miles on it better off rebuilding it or finding one with lower mileage its cheaper and just a s good to do i would also suggest purchaseing the 3800 series 1 of 92 there bulletproof

My 89 2.8 so far has been good, except I need to change all the ignition coils, all seemed to go at same time. Major problem I have is the transmission, makes a loud whining noise when I put it in gear, it shifts fine, and I also changed the fluid but still makes loud annoying sound in gear. any Ideas??

check the crankshaft pulley and see if it is wobbeling. Your Harmonic balancer might be messed up and rubbing against your crankshaft position sensor. I had a problem like this and swore the sound was comming from inside my engine. It's your call.
