Mine was activated when i got in a tiny fender bender at 5mph. No damage to either vehicle but my hood popped up. Pushed the hood back down and it was good to go but i cant get rid of that damn warning. The warning is simply stating that next time there is an accident the hood will not pop back up unless you pay thousands to replace rhe small plastic piece broken on the hood

Watch the hood moving forward. Per the owners manual the actuators, hinges, and latch all should be replaced after deployment. Mine deployed in a fender bender a year and half ago. The shop replaced the actuators but not the hood hinges. Come about a year later the hood would no longer stay latched at the top (couldn't press the corners down anymore to secure). I had to take it back in and get the hood hinges replaced. Thankfully insurance covered it since it should have been fixed the first time.

I posted about this previously when I got the warning. Since then I have had couple issues(cracked windshield, clunk in front suspension, Buick emblem light). Suspension is sway bar end links. All parts on order. Could be a long wait the way things are now.

We hit a dog at low speed (~15 MPH), which deployed the PPS (really, Buick??). One of the hood hinges was definitely damaged and had to be replaced. I could have replaced the parts myself (for about $1200), but would have still had to take it to the dealer to reset the software. Dealer cost was $3000, of which $1000 came out of my pocket (deductible).

If it’s like my company, the hinge is destroyed. There is a small canister and solenoid that deploys partially separating the assembly. I believe the bonnet is also toast due to structural damage around the hinge. These are mandatory safety regulations in some countries. So it may be more a compliance with some overlap the Rental company has. I’ll be honest. The first time I saw this proposed, I thought it was a joke.

Why Does it need to be serviced? I never came close to hitting anything or anyone and mine says it every time I start my 2019 Buick Tour X

Happy to report all repairs are finished. Had an interesting call when the sensor for ped-prot piece came in. Must remove the front bumper assembly. Service writer called and said there was evidence of frontal impact. Owned it 3 years and was dealer demo first. No accidents for me. Was surprised that sensor was a piece of tubing basically. Sway bar fix helped turn in response.

Hey all,

Today, while I was cruising along on the freeway on my home from work, about 30 minutes into my commute, the "Service Pedestrian Protection" warning popped up apropos of nothing. I pressed OK and the warning disappeared.

When I got home, I shut the car off and restarted. The warning showed again.

I haven't hit anything. No crazy potholes. The hood is flush and opens/closes completely normally. The pyrotechnic poppers look brand new and haven't gone off. It just shows me the warning now every time I start it.

Anybody have this happen to them? Is there a way to just disable that, like with a resistor or something? I really don't want to have to miss work just to drop it off at a dealer.

I'm guessing it'll be like a problem I had with a seat airbag on one of my cars. All the dealer did was plug in their diagnostic tool to see which item was causing the problem and then they just re-seated the connector to ensure a good connection, cleared the fault and all was good.

You can probably re-seat the connector your self but the fault will most likely need clearing by someone with a diagnostic tool.

In the future I see a lot of people will likely fit a resistor/capacitor network in place of the actuator to avoid having to replace these sensors when they actuate/fail.

If you have a scan tool you may be able to reset the error message. I had some errors that AutoZone picked up which my scan tool couldn't reset. (For a different reason not pedestrian related)

Ultimately, I had to remove the negative terminal on the battery for a few minutes and that successfully reset everything.

Sorry, I'm not going to be much help here. The camera is located above the rearview mirror. Maybe someone more knowledgeable can jump as far as accessing the area and suggesting which module it's connected to on the other end.

Have you tried pulling the negative terminal off for a bit to see if it resets the code?

Well I had my bumper off this past weekend for another observation which involved unplugging the bumper harness. AFAIK, the pedestrian protection system is not controlled by the camera.

Is the pedestrian warning went off while you were driving? It happens from time to time that the pedestrian signal comes on on my vehicle, even on the highway! I imagine that the sensor confuses a post with a pedestrian, it could even be a bird or insect very close captured by the camera.

Hold on, there’s two systems, one for pedestrians protection (bumber choc sensors, hood and pyrotechnics). And the other one is detection like pedestrians on sidewalk (camera detected). See link below

This is what I was referring to called the Opel Eye above the rear view mirror. I'm pretty sure it's in the TourX (sans the speed limit sign recognition).

I wonder what module the pedestrian protection system is connected to. Maybe there is water intrusion in one of your modules of your vehicle? I'm pretty sure it's not the BCM, but I have heard of people having troubles with their BCM and water.

Of course I'm just stabbing in the dark.

I say that the system detects a pedestrian on the sidewalk or near the vehicle, through the vehicle's camera behind the rearview mirror. If a pedestrian is hit, the bumper's shock sensors detect the impact and trigger the hood lift system.
