I’ve got a 1997 Regal. There is an intermittent ticking noise coming from the center shifter console while I’m driving the car. If I shift to neutral, the ticking will stop. If I shift back to D, the ticking starts again. It sounds like a relay switching on/off. If I place my hand on the shifter column, I can feel the mechanical clicking. Any ideas what this can be?

Do you have the brake/shifter interlock function on your car ? If so it could be the solinoid you hear when you step on the brake pedal ?

Thanks for the reply. It could very well be the solenoid. I’ll have to check it out. I’m not sure if this will help to isolate the problem; yesterday I noticed that I only here the clicking sound when I press on the accelerator pedal. When my foot is off the pedal, there is no clicking sound. But the clicking sound is intermittent, so maybe it was coincidence that the clicking sound could only be heard while pressing on the accelerator pedal. Also, I made a mistake on my original post; the car is a 1998.
