Totaly engine fail - 2.0 Turbo - AWD Regal 2016 AWD- Same as GM - Cadillac ATS

Car still down - hope to see it in a month or so 🙁

Stoopid - they checked the gas - no issue -

Looks like it launched the rings at normal stop light take off - then self destructed at WOT when I was trying to figure out why it was making noise

Long block is NOT an option - asked - just pistons for now - till it blows up again

But they are looking into the colder plugs -

Oh and the rim is cracked - hairline

Just thinking out loud here - would like to see others thoughts

My car is a AWD 2.0T - 2016

From what I have found and what I have been told its a "Rare bird"

Most Buick GS I have seen are FWD - and almost all 2.0T Regal are FWD

Looks like the Caddie ATS is mostly AWD

SO - I wonder if this is a AWD stress on the motor issue?

What do you guys think of that possibility??

Most ATS are rear wheel I think.

Many members here have an AWD GS, it's actually more common from what I've seen than GS with front wheel drive.

Thanks for the update. Too bad it wasn't the gas, that would IMO be the easier-to-accept explanation. Now you'll always have that nagging thought in the back of your mind about the car's reliability (and rightfully so).

Depends on where you are located. I'm 1 hr north of NYC, almost every ATS stocked here is AWD, and most Regals are AWD save a few of the bargain base model turbos. The few GS's I could find are AWD. Everyone here is convinced they need AWD for the 2 significant snowfalls we get per year.

It should also be noted that pushing 260hp/295tq from a 2 liter engine is quite a feat of engineering, and I often wonder if we're not living a touch too close to the bleeding edge.

I dunno Mercedes manages 375hp/350lbft out of their 2.0T in the GLA45 AMG. Granted the engine gets a bit more TLC at the factory but they obviously believe that they can reliably make that kind of power and have a factory warranty on it.

I am in northern Kentucky/Cincinnati area and most of the Regal GS's I am seeing are the newer AWD models.

Completely off-topic but I am in lexington and have yet to see another '12 regal GS, I will have to keep an eye out next time I am up near cinci

October 2017, I bought a used 2016 GS AWD with about 15k miles on it. Fully loaded in great shape. In Nov 2017, At 17k miles, while driving on the highway and passing a semi truck, I shot piston 3 into the intake and destroyed the motor. GM completely replaced the motor, turbo, intercooler, and cat. Got the car back, seemed fine. A week later, my oil pressure went to zero, but it turned out to be a sensor issue. Dealer took care of it. In March 2018, 3000 miles later, while getting on the highway, motor starting running rough. Took it back to dealer. Compression should be around 140. Only have 70 in cylinder 3, around 100 in cylinders 1 and 2, and around 140 in cylinder 4. Right now waiting on results from the teardown to see next steps. Really regretting buying now and hoping GM is going to do something for me. In 20 years of driving, all I have owned is GM products and had great success. Will keep everyone updated.

Thinking it might be a good idea to keep the Buick with a stock tune.
I did not read all the info, but seems that were not many failures with 15 ATS even with the power upgrade for 15.
Traded in stripped 15 ATS on TourX....it was much faster then the TourX.
The LNF in Sol and Skys has more forged parts, and no doubt better pistons. It put out more power, surprisingly, with less CR.

The ATS is lighter than the TourX since it doesn't have the weight of the all wheel drive system the TourX has which is why it's faster. A mild tune isn't going to damage the TourX motor. I've been driving my tuned Regal for 5 years now and it hasn't caused any damage to my motor.
