Trying to connect to Android Auto sometimes causes both center USB ports to completely stop functioning

Updated to 22.11 last Friday, issue still occuring 😔

$180 software update for nothing. Frustrating. Wish I could figure out if this was something wrong with the car or the phone.
Wait, are you out of warranty?

Tried a friend's iPhone today and I'm pretty well certain at this point it's Android Auto. Carplay fired up instantly and flawlessly each time for about 20x aggressively fast unplug and replug cycles--attempting the same with Android Auto caused the head unit to crash after about 10 tries

Gonna be switching in the near future. Been using Android for like 10 years but this is the last straw.

Glad it's not the car at least.

Could it be the cable?

Hope the switch is what works for you but if you are only jumping because an AA update caused an issue, Carplay has had update issues too. Though to be fair they typically resolve it faster...just don't want you to be expecting rainbows and unicorns.

Neither CP or AA should need;
about 20x aggressively fast unplug and replug cycles
AA loads every time I plug in my Pixel 4a, after I bought a new, not cheapest available, cable.
Granted mines a 17 but maybe it's your ports that are bad!

I have no doubt that the fact that my devices are OnePlus factors into this, this android auto kerfuffle is far from the only or first thing that has had me debating switching. This is just the last straw for me, personally.

And to clarify (as I realize I didn't make it clear in the last post,) Carplay worked perfectly for *each* of the 20x attempts, leading me to conclude it's not the ports.

Plug in -> carplay starts up -> unplug works every time, 20x

Plug in -> android auto starts up, head unit crashes/USB Ports disable 20% of attempts

I'm quite sure it's not my cables either; I tried four different of my own and ordered a set of new ones. I was able to reproduce the issue with all of them.

Hmmm... I've had none of those issues running AA or Wireless AA with my OnePlus 6

Is the app up to date on your device?

If it's not the device itself, I'd say there's still something buggy with the infotainment system itself.

Thank you Jack, yes the Android Auto app is up to date. I just uninstalled and reinstalled it, as well as reset the head unit to be sure and I reproduced the crashing issue again. Which version of Android are you on on your 6? Once android 11 rolled to 6 is when I started having my issues. I was able to roll my 6 back to 10 but the 8t has 11 on it by default.

I am on 11.

11.1.2.2 specifically, but it's been compatible since day one (since 2018) with 10 installed.

Thanks for the info. I'll have them look at the USB ports next opportunity but I've spent this evening plugging in a variety of iPhones, tablets, flash drives and cameras into the center USB port and have not observed a single malfunction on the head unit except for when the Android phone is plugged in. Glad you're having good fortune with 11! when 11 came to my Oneplus 6, I couldn't get Android Auto to function at all in any capacity whatsoever haha. So this isn't my first run of AA bad luck

My OnePlus One had bluetooth issues. But only with my ski helmet. It worked everywhere else. It turned out to be whatever that chipset the helmet used didn't play nice with the phone. It took about eight months to get a patch.

How can the Android phone turn off the USB jacks?

The only solution so far is to completely turn of the cars electric system and then turn on the ignition all over again. If the charging doesn't light up on the phone, Android Auto can't turn itself on. Any other solutions? It happens sporadically.

I have found that force quitting Spotify before I enter the car every time heads off the issue. I can't say for sure that that fixes it, but I have never had the issue occur after an instance of me doing this.

I'm using MA1 wireless AA module over a year now, never an issue (well actual module died on me and I've got replacement from Motorolla), but as far as connectivity - never an issue. Are you red or white needles?
