My local Buick dealership diagnosed the black screen problem on my 2015 lacrosse as a faulty HMI module. I am getting conflicting information on whether a used salvage HMI module can be installed and programed to my vehicle vin#. Even the Buick service department is unsure if it can be programed. I did install the salvage module and still have a black touchscreen. I thought that it would at least light the screen but would not be fully functional. They suggest programming it to see if it will work. Before I spend another $165 on something that may or may not work I would think that someone would have definitive knowledge if It is even possible to be programed. I am grateful for any input.. Thanks, Dave

What do they do when they order a new one? Cannt imagine the local GM parts warehouse is going to program a new one. The dealer doesn't want the responsibility of the salvage yard unit being defective/wrong unit/not correctly installed, and you still have to pay the $165.

I was told by the dealership that a new one is $1200 , and that it "should" fix the problem.. Not it "will" fix the problem.. if it doesnt work, I just bought a $1200 part that I do not need. A salvage HMI is $100 , but if it cant be programed what good is it. Someone out there must have knowledge on whether a salvage module can be programed, or no it cannot.

Why would you pay for the new one if it doesnt work if they ordered it and installed it?
You still haven't asked the dealer how they would program a new one?
Seems like they would use the same process for a used one.
You need more clarification from the dealer or find another dealer.
Do you have the part number for the HMI?

Depending on how involved you want to get, put "GM HMI vin programming" in Google. You will see not only more on the GM other models HMI, services that would be able to possibly update the model but at least be able to put the VIN in it. As looking for the answer on can it be done, check other GM forums, Chevrolet vehicles, Corvette and trucks along with Cadillac as it appears to be successful but it may be MY and vehicle. Trust me there more information on HMI then you're every want to know.

I have seen this company mentioned in other forums as one of the go to for various updates and upgrades.

Great, thank you for the information. I will research it and hopefully get some answers. I will post if I am able to get this issue resolved.

Part number is #23228496. Paying for a part that does not fit is the conundrum. The code that it is throwing could be the touchscreen , cable or the HMI. However, given their past experience coupled.. with the the way it was acting prior to going out, they think it is the HMI. There are no guarantees, this is their best guess and starting point. Like every other electrical part I ever purchased, they are not returnable.

Part 23228496 strangely matches on Ebay a lot of Chevrolet cars and trucks along with the Cadillac cars and trucks but doesn't show up with a Buick. Even on some of the GM online parts stores it listed differently with a few Buicks, not the Lacrosse on a few and even being discontinued. So it appears even GM isn't to sure LOL, hopefully you can find someone who can confirm and get it resolved.

Funny that you would come to the same conclusion. I am wondering if the factory put the wrong module in my vehicle when it was built. I pulled the module and that is the part number on it. I also found that when I enter the module number up with the " check the fit " on the parts websites . They state that it is the wrong module. I am awaiting the Buick service manager return phone call.

They are interchangeable throughout GM's, but a Second
hand will need reprogrammed to work with your Car, VIA: VIN Number.
The Dealership should be able to do this for you, but not
always willing to do it, they want to sell you a New HMI Unit
at the cost of $1200.

Here is a link that shows this HMI (Part# 23228496) does fit your 2015 LaCrosse.
You may have to enter your Vehicle by clicking on the Check Fit Button.
That same Part will work in my 2015 Buick Regal!

I am Upgrading my from the NG 2.0 HMI to a NG 2.5 HMI and the
Radio Module for the Apple Car Play, Android Auto & HD Radio Features.
I own a 2015 Buick Regal and these options weren't offered until 2016.
I just shipped my Sourced Parts to White Automotive & Media Services yesterday.
They offered a List of Part Numbers for me to look for on Ebay and Amazon.
The Programming will allow these features to work with my car.

You could actually purchase New Parts (HMI & Radio Module) from
White Automotive or Source your own from Ebay/Amazon.
WAMS could then program them for you with the same Upgrade I'm getting (Car
Play & Android Auto).
The HMI would be the NG 2.5 HMI, faster than the NG 2.0 HMI.
With all the Upgrades it's just under $1000 (you could buy less making it cheaper).
This includes the New 2020 Map Upgrade and and Full HMI Unlock.
Getting all these upgrades would be cheaper than getting just the HMI Replaced at the Dealership!

To save money you could get the Car Play & Android Auto Upgrade
without purchasing an HMI with the Navigation, but that's up to you.
You could then use your iPhone or Android Phone as your Navigation,
most people say that Google GPS is better than Factory Navigation.
Myself, I'm stubborn and wanted my Factory Navigation!

Thank you, I will be making calls in the morning . Cant take not having a radio , nav. and back up camera ....

Not having a Radio would be enough to kill it for me!

My son is a Service Writer for a Buick Dealership and he said he could
Program a Used Unit for me, so I know it can be done!
I'm sure they will either tell you it Can't Be Done or they will Only Do It On A New Unit!
Only thing, the Programming he would do couldn't give me the features I'll be getting with
the Upgrade from White Automotive & Media Services.

Good luck tomorrow.
Hope you can get it all sorted out!

I received my Reprogrammed NG 2.5 HMI and Radio Module back from White Automotive & Media Services Wednesday evening around 5:30pm.
I sent it to them Friday, June 5th at 3:33pm and received it back less than a Week later on Wednesday, June 10th at 5:30pm.
This time included Travel Time to and from White Automotive (WOW).

I had already replaced the Old USB w/SD Card Reader with a New USB w/o SD Card Reader.
I replaced the USB about a week ago, figured I'd just get a jump on this Upgrade!

I spent about 2-3 hours tearing apart my 2015 Buick Regal today.
I started with tearing out the Glove Box and replacing the Radio Module.
Wasn't hard getting the Glove Box out with only 4 bolts holding it in.

I then replaced the Old NG 2.0 HMI with the Newly Reprogrammed NG 2.5 HMI.
It took some time tearing the Touchscreen, AC/Heat Controls, Ash Tray all out.
Had to give each and every piece a bit of muscle to get them out.
Kept Praying I wouldn't Break anything (I didn't).

It is all installed and looks as great as it did before I tore it apart.
I now have Apple Car Play and Android Auto, 2020 Map Upgrade and Full HMI Unlocked Programming.
Haven't had much time today to play with all the features, but I'm sure that will come with time.

It was IMO an expensive venture, but I think it's worth it!
I know I can use the Rear Camera as I'm driving, not just when backing up!
Think that will help when driving on the Highways.
Also good for watching Tailgaters to know when I should hit the brake, JK!

BTW, I have a more detailed version on the Buick Regal 2011-2017/Buick Regal GS Forum under the title HMI Upgrade!

Thanks for the update. I have contacted Buick customer service and am waiting for a response. They are going to look into the history of past service attempts to fix the problems with the non working Infotainment and Forward Collision Alert systems. I am hoping that Buick will make the car whole again and restore my lifelong support of GM.

Sure hope they take care of everything for you.
Sounds like a lot of things are not working properly and need to be fixed.
Not having a Radio would be enough for me!

I'm currently working on installing a 2.5 HMI in my 2015 Regal as well.. I'm wondering why you took the effort to replace the USB. Is this required for appleplay/android? Do you have a Part number for that usb?

Regards,

Stay clear of this company, they make this process a absolute mess. Can I ask why you continue to drop their name when we all know that they charge an arm and leg, while making the customer TEAR APART THEIR VEHICLE to, hopefully, add NAV? There are many other simpler options out there. Do you work for them? Is this why you would recommend such a horrible idea?
