At start and stop, also backing up getting a thud/ knocking sound from rear. Also from start to 10 mph, deceleration 10mph-0. Dealer can't figure out.

Loose wheel lug nuts, loose suspension parts, loose brake parts, loose stuff rolling around in the spare tire well?

I used to get a thud on the front right of my Chevy Volt which was solved temporarily when Paula, the attractive Chevy service manager torqued my nuts (the big one that holds the front end assembly to the axle). a few years later the thud returned requiring a bearing replacement, a new washer, and another nut torquing. I love having Paula torque my nuts. I don’t know if the TourX rear axle has any nuts to torque.

Paula sounds great!
No ,dealer has had it up on alignment rack, new shocks installed. Definitely not the obvious.
Growing tired of this Buick that I haven't been able to enjoy because of these issues.

What about the heat shields over the mufflers? Those things make all kinds of noise when they’re loose.

It's not a rattle at all but a solid thud. Almost like the suspension is binding up and then releasing. Thought it was the upper control link or something but dealer is lost. Had them switch tech's due to receiving the car back with the same sound even after replacing rear shocks under warranty

My 2018 is going to the shop tomorrow for the same thing. I hope they can figure it out!

I also have this problem and came across this. Make sure you bring this up to the dealer when you take it in. It looks like this is a very common issue with the gen 9 malibu and they have the same part.

I have this grinding popping sound as well. I think your video link is the best guess. I also had my rear stabilizer bar or whatever it is called replaced under warranty because the rubber was squeaking. Dealer said it failed prematurely.

Mine has started making a bit of a thud in the rear end from a stop. I've not checked yet, but I suspect it's one of the rear brakes hanging up. One rear rotor has a groovy grove in it, so I suspect I'm in need of a rear brake job. (car has around 80,000km on it)

My GS is going in tomorrow morning. My problem started with a rattle happening exclusively when right rear wheel went over a bump. Then a few days ago something broke and the sound, when same wheel gets a bump, is like loose parts rattling around. To make things more complicated now the parts may rattle for a very short time and then all goes quiet. Im hoping the tech hears the rattling parts.

This began in April so needless to say I am fed up with the noises. I’m seriously contemplating trading the car in and returning to Audi.

I know the Malibus (2016 and up) that share the platform with the Regal have issues with the rear knuckle needing replaced due to noise. Maybe it’s the same issue?

Just left dealer. They heard noise loud and clear and traced it to a strut mount. Ordered part for install next week. Will advise !
Is this possibly a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) item?

Don’t know. It will be covered by my CPO warranty.

I got this fixed at the dealer last week. I wanted to give it some time to make sure, but replacing the rear knuckles was absolutely the fix to this for me.

It’s most likely your Adjust Link bushings, which is easy to remove, but you’ll need an alignment.I changed my trailing arms and shocks because I though that’s what the noise was. Adjust Links are also called Lateral Links or Rear Stabilizier bar.

I’m having the same sound like a strong thud from rear driver side mostly. Do you have a video of yours?

Did you resolve issue? I’m having the same issue.

Did you resolve the issue? I’m having the same issue. Mechanic is unable locate. I’m confused either to replace strut mount or rear knuckles.

I would be curious to know how long replacing the knuckles fixed it. I have a 2018 with the noise. I had the rear shocks, upper and lower control arms, and the wheel bearings replaced. It made the car drive better but the noise was the same. The shop then replaced the rear knuckles and it stopped the noise on my car too. But it was only for about 5 weeks, then it came back just like it was.
Was it a permanent fix for you or what happened?
