Sunshade fell apart

So, I did a bit of research and found an expert on this style of sunshades in my area. According to him, the problem is typically the adhesive. Our cars, being German, use an adhesive on these shades that will *typically* come loose in warmer climates much earlier than they should. Mine fell apart about the same mileage as yours. Unfortunately, the repair is to replace the entire shade mechanism, it all comes as one unit so there is no re-adhering it to the track. My hope was that I’d be able to repair it with a better-than-stock adhesive but that isn’t generally an option.
So if anyone lives in a warmer climate like I do, it is just part of owning a car with a linen sunshade like this that you replace the shade every 4 to 7 years. The price I was quoted in the aftermarket was $1500 to drop the headliner, replace the mechanism, and clean out the sun roof rails. I’m going with the dealer warranty repair obviously… But I figured this would be good info to have on the forums.

If anyone has any other experience or shops that have given different info or quotes, post it up here so we can have as accurate of information as possible.
I’ve repaired a lot of vw,s Audis bmw Mercedes they all fail in the same way glue let’s go rips shade no of them are a easy fix I’m usually at a 1000 to do them takes two people and a few hours depending on the car
 
$1,500 is absurd for a sunroof shade. The shade itself is $250 at full list on GM's site or $164 at GM Parts Direct (above). Were there more parts than just the shade? If so, could you provide a list? BTW - Part #391302525 is the new part that supersedes the original shade 39026681. I'll call this week and see what the local dealer quotes for the job. 🤞 Between the shade and tires, it will be a big week of car-related bills.

I recently had to have my sunshade replaced just outside of the warranty and GM picked up half the bill out of goodwill. Book time is almost 7 hours of labor for the process. The part might be $250, but you have to have someone install it, and do it right. $1500 including tax isn't unreasonable. $145/hour is the average shop charge in the US for 2022. So you're looking at about $1300 between parts and labor. Add tax and that's in the ballpark.

I can confirm the ridiculousness of it all. The quote to fix it was $1,500. I should have poked it a few times before the B2B portion of the warranty ended.

Had this happen to me back in Sept. 2023. Loud crunching and tearing noise, shade hanging down. Made an appointment at Tulley Buick in Nashua, NH. They discovered that the the springs responsible for retracting the shade had snapped causing the shade to jam as the bar was moving forward. Ordered new springs for $110. They were due in Nov. As of now there is no delivery date for the parts. Still waiting.

2018 TourX has had a sagging sunshade since I bought the car in November, but it worked. Fell apart the other day, luckily covered under extended warranty. About 62,000 miles on the car, Chevy dealership service department was great, Buick/GMC, not so much. Happy it’ll get fixed, really like the car. Curious how long the repair has lasted for others.
I recently encountered a similar issue with my Buick Platinum Protection Plan purchased from a Buick dealer (not a third-party insurance). Although the dealer can see that the plan is active in the GM system, my service advisor informed me that the warranty would not cover the sunshade replacement because it is not considered a motor-related problem. Consequently, I am now expected to pay $1700 for the sunshade replacement.

Additionally, last year I had to refresh my interlink system to resolve a Carplay issue. Unfortunately, the Buick Platinum Protection Plan declined to cover this as well, stating that it only covers hardware replacement, such as the entire interlink system, and not software installations.

Could you please share how your dealer managed to claim coverage under the warranty for similar issues?

My extended warranty was third party I purchased through Carmax, I really don’t know how the Chevy service department wrangled the coverage for the sunshade. My out of pocket cost was $400, if I remember correctly.
 
How hot does it get in the summer if lets say you just removed the shade and went without? I wonder if window tinting the moonroof would help. Just looking at my options when mine goes. Bought my 2018 in Nov 2023, open the shade 2 times within a week of purchase to show people. Have not opened it since out of fear😔
 
The sunshade and parts are totally covered under the Platinum plan. Mine was serviced and worked on for over 3-6 months while they had to order parts twice, went through two loaners and such. In your Platinum coverage it states that that sunroof/ shade is definitely covered and you either need to find a better dealer or a manager to work with.

My biggest struggle is explaining I HAVE the Platinum plan which is usually listed at the bottom of the customer info pages.

Hands down though it's covered and unfortunately we shouldn't have to explain as customers that I have a warranty and parts are covered.

I appended my platinum plan and the terms they cited from it to decline my claims one sunshade, and last year update my interlink system:

Sunshade Update - New part came in July. Glass had also stopped retracting. Tulley took it apart, glass tested fine. First sunshade unwound, got second one and installed successfully. Have had vehicle for two days. So far, so good. Also had my local mechanic check rear diff for fluid level. It was empty. He refilled and all's well. 59000 miles.
