Transmission extension housing

I appear to have some occasional transmission fluid seeping between my transmission extension housing. It's not a bad drip, but more like some seeping. I dried the area very well and then I put some gasket maker in between and it appears to have stopped the seeping for now.. (see photo). If it starts to seep fluid again, is there a gasket in between that I could replace or do I need to replace the entire transmission extension housing? Thanks.

can you check the torque on the bolts

this is the seal for the extension housing. not the easiest to remove but its not that hard either. you need ot pull the axle (THE AXLE HAS A SEAL TOO THAT COULD BE THE SOURCE) and then a few sensors out of the way

What's the torque specs on those bolts suppose to be? Thanks!

Make sure to pick up a new axle seal

helps to have a seal installer for this

Sincey ou want to seal your extension housing. when you thing off, post a picture of the trans case surface where it meets the extension and then that surface as wellm, check it for being straight/true and not gouged or have other contaminants

So basically I have a total of 3 seals that I should replace if I took on this project? Or is my seeping probably due to the actual case seal?

If you were able the stop the seepage with some external gasket maker Then it makes sense that's were the leak is. I would first as said before, re torque all the bolts. If your not in a sub-zero climate area you can add a bottle of Lucas trans-fix. I usually don't suggest this to fix slipping but for fluid seepage it works great. If you start pulling the trans apart I'm sure you will be creating new problems you didn't have before.

Good stuff, but had to take a hairdryer to the container to heat it up a bit. That stuff is really thick and will get stuck in the dip stick tube.

I wouldnt pull the extension housing unless you were ready to inspect bits on your final drive and replace the *2* seals. I posted 3 because while you are in there other people may do the other axle seal.evne tho its no where close 😛

Update!

So I decided to put the car on my ramps today and try to figure out exactly why the extension house is leaking. Here's what I found which absolutely shocked me. The extension housing is held on by 4 bolts, 2 on top, 2 on bottom. Well I decided to back the bolts out and re torque them, the bottom bolts were tight but the 2 top bolts were loose! I'm talking like backed out halfway and hand loose! I'm not sure why they were loose, but if I had to guess, it's when I got the engine block replaced maybe they removed the extension housing to do the block for more room. I didn't have the transmission leak before I got the block replaced, so it makes sense. Everything is back together with a new reusable gasket a new filter and new fluid. I also put some sealant on the extension housing before I re torqued the bolts. I hope this solves this leak! I'll update in a few days with hopefully good news.

so your sealant you put on, where exactly did you put it? I think the more likely answer is someone got happy removing bolts and forgot to tighten the two out-of-sight bolts so thus out of mind back properly. Im hoping your seal will hold then, because if it was reusing the old seal, it may still leak, but if the seal is new, it may just seal it up.

I was able to separate it enough to use the sealant. I then let it dry, put new fluid in and let the car run for a bit and cycled through the gears. So far no signs of leaking, but I won't know for sure for a few days. I'll update here.

Maybe I didn't word that properly because I know what your thinking lol. I didn't use it to form a gasket. I tightened the 4 bolts then put some sealant on the outside of the edges of the extension housing where I had the minor leak/seepage.

So you tightened it first not onto the area then tightened?

if you end up needing to replace the seal to the housing, youll want to use threadlocker on the housing bolts as well as put a new axle seal in it

I'm just hoping the leak was from the top 2 bolts not being tightened. I'll know in a few days if it's good.
