2016 Regal Turbo Premium 2 FWD
I have an early 2016 Regal. Any easy way to tell if it has the Android Auto in it?

Go into settings, it should show Android Auto right under CarPlay. Or just plug in an Android Phone with AA installed.

I ordered an android phone and it will get here eventually. I have another early 2016 Gm car also. On that one I called the dealer I bought it from and they looked my VIN number up. It showed that they did the android update before they sold it to me. So I know that one is good to go. On the Regal they could not find anything like that. I does not surprise me because I ordered it new and basically took it home right off from the back of the car carrier when it got to the dealership.

It is like you say, I looked at a car that has the Android Auto and under the settings it is listed under the CarPlay. Regal does not show it so I will make an appointment to have it done while wait for my phone to show up. Thanks.

CarPlay to my knowledge is Apple operating system not Android

Just got back from the dealer and I was told that a new Android phone may not work with the older android software that is available. Has anyone tried a new Android phone on a 2016 or 2017 Regal? I would imagine they do not do many of these updates.

Did you receive the android phone yet, load the app on the phone and pair the phone to the car?

No it is not here yet and I am reading that this phone has android 10 in it and will have the android app in it. (Samsung Galaxy A02s (S124DL)

The software has to be updated just the one time and will work with all later Android versions. The dealer is incorrect.

You mean that the Android Auto needs to be down loaded into the car and there is one version of that ?

Do you currently have an icon on the Screen labeled Projection?

Infotainment manual states label on screen called Projection will become Android Auto if you connect a phone with the App. It becomes Car Play for Apple. Have you looked in the manual?

Yes, I have the projection button, But in the settings only car-play is listed. Are you aware that early 2016 Regal only came with Carplay but the radio had the capability to be up graded to Android Auto. Your 2017 would have both of these from the factory and your projection button would show this. If you look in your settings you would also see both listed.

If there is a "Projection" icon in your display you are AA/CP ready.
Look in your owner's manual and follow the instructions.
I have a Pixel 4a with Android 12 that works perfectly in my 17 Regal. I didn't need to update the car.
Download the app to your phone and follow the steps.
Obviously, the dealer doesn't have a clue about the system.

Yes the dealer has to update the 2016 Regal only. It was originally done for free under warranty, but now the dealer will charge you $100 or less.

I bought the car new in January of 2016. At that time I was aware of some kind of update for a cell phone but I did not pursue it. I found out a few minutes ago that my phone should be shipped tomorrow so it should not be too long now. I was fearing that it was on back order. The dealer told me that it would be $120 plus tax and the other dealer would be $20 more. I let you guys know how it all goes.

If you have the Older 2.5 HMI unit you'll need to have it Updated if you didn't have it done after you purchased the vehicle.
As mitchflorida stated; years ago, it was Free, but now you'll have to pay for it.
The Earlier run of the 2016's did not have Android Auto installed, the later run did.
If you don't see Android Auto in the Settings, you don't have it installed and will have to take it in for the update.

I have a 2015 Regal and Car Play/Android Auto wasn't available at that time.
I Purchased a 2.5 HMI and Radio Module on Ebay and then sent them to WAMS to have them Programmed to my VIN.
When I received my HMI and Radio Modules back from WAMS I installed them, since I had an iPhone 7 it worked great.

But I was considering purchasing a New Samsung Phone with Android for my next phone.
I decided to try an Android phone on the system before I purchased one to see if I liked it, so I borrowed my Sister's
Samsung Phone.
When I plugged it in It wasn't recognizing her phone., and her phone did already have the Android Auto App on it.
After checking in the settings, I found Android Auto wasn't even listed.
I had purchased an HMI and Radio Module Using White's Best Practices List (buying one with the correct numbers to assure
it had Car Play and Android Auto installed).

Looks like the Auto Scrap Yard I purchased the 2.5 HMI from had placed a New Sticker over the Old Factory Sticker.
I'm sure they did this so they could charge more for the 2.5 HMI (they knew what the correct numbers were also).
This unit did come from the earlier run of 2016's and had Car Play, but it didn't have Android Auto!
White Automotive & Media Services did take care of me, they had me send the HMI Module back to them and they
put the Android Auto Update on it for me (without charging extra).
They never checked to see if the unit had Android Auto on it, it was one of the correct numbers they'd listed and
should have had Android Auto already installed.

BTW, I decided to stick with the iPhone, purchasing an iPhone 12 Pro instead of going with a Samsung.
But at least I know I can now Use an Android Phone If I ever decide to go that route.
