Paint Problems

What number did you call? I have exact same issue on exact same color. Very dissapointed.
For questions about your Buick vehicle, new vehicles or my account information:
1-800-521-7300

Is yours 2018 or 2019 model year?

They called me back and left a voicemail saying that they will not cover anything after initial 12-month period. I will be calling them back telling them we will start a class action lawsuit unless they do something about it.
To be honest we can totally get a class action lawsuit going. All of us here have the same problem in the same area. It looks like a defect to me.

I'd start taking some pictures and posting them on GM social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc). Make sure future owners know what GM thinks the paint should look like on a 3-4 year old car. I'm sure that will get some attention.

Adding to this thread as it was pointed out to me…
So I’ve got a paint peeling issue at the top center of roofline above the windshield. I’ve reached out to Buick and they tell me it’s not covered due to many factors, including weather, chemicals in cleaning fluids, etc.

@ready2fly, were you able to come to an agreement with the dealer even though GM stated they would not cover it after the 12 month period?

Seems like more folks are having the same issue.
My dealer offered to repaint my roof for around 600 dollars. I called GM and they refuse to do anything since the car is more than 12 months old. I will let it slide for now, my Regal is at 90k miles. If I end up keeping the car for another 2 years, I will pay to get the roof repainted.

Welcome to the club. It is definitely a defect.

I've got a 2017 Buick Lacrosse and just noticed the paint is starting to peel on the inside edges of the roof ditches! Searching online to see if others have a similar problem.

" If you’re the owner of a 2015-2019 GM truck or SUV, there’s something you need to know. A class action lawsuit has been filed against General Motors over paint defects affecting these vehicles. The plaintiffs also allege that GM knew about the defect and failed to take corrective action. The lawsuit Riley, et al., vs. General Motors LLC has been filed in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida "

The suit also claims GM was aware of the paint defects, but did not inform it’s customers and continued to market and sell the vehicles.

Thanks for posting this. I've always felt my paint was also not up to snuff. Look at it wrong and it chips. 🙄

I just did some fairly extensive touch ups on my 2018 this summer. My biggest issue is that chips seem to "grow" and get down the primer with little effort. My 2010 Toyota had what I thought was "thin" paint - the front end was pretty pockmarked but at least each spot didn't continuously grow.

FWIW, I had to buy darkmoon blue metallic (or whatever it is is called) touch-up paint for my new-to-me '18 Tour-X. I saw paint peeling in the crevice between the hood and front fender, a good amount of it. Looks just like all the photos in the thread except a different spot. Luckily it had not spread into visible surfaces like the actual fender itself.

I applied a 3-step primer/basecoat/clearcoat and that seems to have solved it for now. If you happen to be looking at it from above with a flashlight, you might notice where the new paint was applied.

I have yet to see peeling along the roofline or anywhere else, but I'm on the lookout for it. This car I'm realizing, has terrible, very delicate paint. Way too many etches in the clearcoat, swirl marks, etc. for a car this age that has been meticulously maintained. Just not a robust, durable finish. Some part of me wants to chalk it up to modern ECO-friendly processes like water based paint, as I've heard others complain about paint durability on other newer makes.

Nothing will sour resale value quicker than a terrible paint job. I had to get rid of my 2004 Honda Odyssey a few years ago for that reason. I generally keep cars till the wheels fall off; it ran like a top at 240K miles, but the midnight blue paint they used in those years was defective (incompatible with primer) such that they actually recalled the cars for X number of years. Problem is my van's paint lasted just long enough for the recall to expire, before the blue paint started flaking/falling off in sheets. I have zero problems driving old cars but once it starts looking like a hooptie, I'm done with it. I really hope the same doesn't happen with this Buick.

My paint was in pretty bad shape when I got it with 41K miles. The previous owner obviously took it to a car wash several times.

I had been wanting to learn how to do paint correction, so I prepped the surface with a clay bar and began polishing with the least aggressive product, which was Meguiar’s Professional Fine Cut Polish. Next I used an Exoforma Swirl Remover and finished it off with a Zymol Cleaner Wax.

I used the Bauer brand dual action polisher from Harbor Freight, which works great if you take a few minutes to replace the factory grease in the head. Start with a light cutting pad and move up to a medium cutting pad if you still see fine scratches.

Remember, you can always go more aggressive, never less.

This was after the first clay bar treatment…

Just found this on my car at the lip at the top of the hood near the wipers. Sent it into my dealer since I'm still under warranty. This car is great but also drive me bonkers with it's little things I've never experienced before in other brands.

My 2018 is haveing the same issue. I bought my car in Manasquan NJ. I will be reaching out to the dealer and keep you posted. the car is in great shape and is taken very good care of. It looks like when I drove it out of the dealer in 2019 besides a few minor scratches. The fact that it wil not be fixed by GM is very aggravating.

The paint on some GM vehicles delaminates, peels, bubbles, or blisters, without any external or environmental influence.

Blistering can occur when automotive water-based primers aren't fully cured and the top coat is applied too quickly. This can cause water and/or solvent to get trapped in the top coat, resulting in blistering.

I dare one of you to open the trunk lid and take a peek underneath. My paint has come off in that crevice (where the roof tucks under the back hatch) from one side to the other. I bet nobody notices this area.

The other spots I've noticed are in between the fender/A-pillar as I'd mentioned earlier, and where the windshield meets the roof. This flaw seems to only affect the crevices where sun doesn't shine. That's very fortunate for us, because few people see those areas. I'm confident with the 3-step touch up paint I have, it will keep it from spreading to the more fully-cured sun-exposed areas.

I have 2018 Mercedes Benz C300 4Matic, the same problem on the roof...

Oh you bought the three-pack of pen brushes? Comes with primer, paint, and clear? I’ve used mine a couple times already.

Handy as a shirt pocket!

I can't remember where I bought mine, but it was three separate bottles of primer, paint and clear. I think I paid $30 or so on Amazon or Ebay, can't remember which. The paint match was close enough for me and the areas I've applied it on are solid a year later.
