Paint Problems

Have a 2018 rioja red regal sportback in Ohio. I thought maybe this was caused by a rough automatic car wash ans I was the only one with this issue...did anyone's get fixed?

I just got done posting in the 'failing differential' thread and saw this one. I have the same situation.
2019 GS, 75k miles, car lives outside and is washed approximately monthly via automatic car wash.

The pearl white paint is failing at the body seam line between the roof panel and the body side panels, above the doors.
I noticed that the paint had been touched up above the driver door several weeks after I bought the car in winter, 2022. (It was used / GM CPO.) This was annoying & frustrating to see, but since it was a used car, I decided to move on.

Last spring the touch-up paint began failing. Now all of the touch-up has cracked away and the original paint is failing and leaving a primer gray valley in the aforementioned body seam.

Once I determine what can/should be done about the noisy rear differential, I'll consider dealing with the failing paint.

I'll be keeping an eye on this. I was hoping our pearl white paint would be exempt, as most paints that have issues outdoors are the dark colors. Mine lives inside but it seems like more of a bonding issue between the paint and primer than an environmental issue. Time will tell.

My pearl white is doing the same thing in the same spots. Dealer didn't care when I brought it up... I touched it up, but I guess that isn't a good final solution.

My pearl white has started to fail where the roof meets the windshield.

I'd sincerely like to know who has good dealership experiences. Anyone? And if you have a good dealership, where is this dealership?

The degree to which dealerships are not just indifferent towards customers, but intentionally fleece them, delight in their misery, and show an utter disdain for their existence is bewildering, slightly unnerving, and in the case of a couple of experiences I've had, criminal. (Sorry for the rant. I'm mentally preparing for engaging a dealership, apparently.)

I stopped and looked at the paint failure on my car a little closer last night while I was hunting for the paperwork I posted in the failed differential thread. The paint failure is spreading fairly quickly now. Since my driveline saga will likely play out over several weeks, perhaps I'll do some research on whether or not the problem can be arrested; if so how; and then how to repaint.

Even if I unload the GS because of the driveline; failing paint isn't going to be a selling point.

I am curious to know if those having these paint failure issues use automatic carwashes or wash their car by hand.
Mechanized carwashes are VERY hard on paint.
Personally, I have never taken any car I've owned to a carwash and the paint has remained looking like new for the duration of ownership.
My previous wagon, a 2003 Passat, still looked brand new when I sold it after 18 years.
So far, my TourX paint is looking fine with the exception of a couple of small chips on the front fascia.

I use touchless washes to supplement hand washes on all my vehicles, and have never had issues. I share your curiosity when it comes to automatic touch washes though.

I have a good dealership with a service manager that understands me and my OCD. However, that has not prevented the technicians from doing more damage than good at times. That being said, they have always made it right. The key here is finding a service manager that actually cares.

I have said this in other posts, but try to find a Cadillac dealership. They tend to show more care on customer service side. A lot of Buick/Chevrolet/GMC dealers treat you like a number.

General Motors allegedly knew or should have known the paint peels, bubbles, and delaminates, yet the automaker continued to market and sell the vehicles.

Owners also claim a GM peeling paint recall should be ordered because the paint and clear coat were chemically unable to bond properly.

Except for after warranty work by the dealer, my car has never seen a carwash. However it is kept outdoors 100% of the time. It is hand washed often.

Our 2018 TourX has the same thing happening - chipped paint along the top edge of the windshield. Touchless washes only, but at 96K miles, long out of warranty.

It's the primer and paint that don't adhere properly. I see no issues with the clear coat on mine, nor have I read about any. Do you have an example of clear coat failures? Sounds like lawyer speak to me.

2018 and touched up some peeling/chipping above the windshield last Nov. Maybe 3 touchless auto washes this winter, mostly at-home handwashes thru winter till now. The peeling is like 7x what it was last fall now. Hope to find time for more touchup this weekend.

2020 sportback here, ebony twilight metallic. Warranty expired in February, paint started failing in the roof channels this summer. Both sides. Always hand washed and waxed.

Been following this thread for a while, thought I was going to get away with it. Yeah right...

2019 regal GS here with 48k miles, bought it used last august. Ive loved the car, but as many people have pointed out, there are little things like this that pop up. I just noticed i had paint peeling in the rain channels on my roof as well. any update on this class action lawsuit or remedies for this?image 2.webpimage 1.webp

2011 Regal GS here. Silver paint. Same issue. I thought it was mainly because the car is 14 years old. But noooo. Car lives outside 100% of the time. Mid-Atlantic. Otherwise been happy with car.

I recently bought my 2019 TourX from Triangle Chevrolet (used to also be a Buick dealer) with 54k miles. It was a long distance purchase so I asked as many questions as I could think of and had them take lots of photos and check many areas. One thing they told me was that there were no body issues and zero rust. But after I bought it I noticed that it does indeed have rust as well as peeling paint on the roof at the top of the windshield. There's also about a 2" strip of paint missing along the outside "ditch" of the left roof rail. They sold this car new, serviced it during ownership, and took it in on trade. They obviously knew about the issue and lied to me about it, along with lies about a few other things about the car. It lived in the Defuniak Springs, FL area, where the dealership is.

Bummer about the whole ordeal. This seems to be a common paint issue. If you act on it now, that rust is all superficial and can be cleaned up and painted over. Even if it's just a touch-up and not a full roof panel repaint.

One of the risks of buying sight unseen unfortunately.
