Regal GS headlight assembly w/ HID Discontinued?

$1500 to replace at dealer for a 2012 with less than 70k miles. This is crazy. A headlight that cost 25% of the cars current value.

I am trying to see if they can replace the assembly with a halogen assembly. Clearly this part was not ready for prime time.

This is the first car I’ve owned with HID headlight. Is this a common problem on other vehicles with HID systems?

I gave up trying to buy a new headlight assembly due to cost and availability, and replaced the ballast and sealed my headlight like an exterior window. Light works and no new leakage so far.

Can someone verify if 2014 headlight assemblies are interchangeable with 2013? I have seen aftermarket assemblies for 14-17 regals but when I look on RockAuto it shows same part numbers.

Where did you purchase the ballast ? Cost ?

Why not bake it, throw in a silica pack and change out the ballast?

A. Too much water for a silica pack. B. Hi heat of HID might have caused the leaking, baking might make it worse.

Not what I wanted to do, but I swapped mine out for Halogen assemblies.

Are they available for the 2013 GS, and are they a direct plug in, w/o any re-wiring?

Thanks!

These don't have the LED "eyebrows" though, do they?

I just am debating. My drivers assembly was replace two years ago under warranty. It leaked 6 months later, I replaced the ballast and sealed it with silicon. It just leaked again last november. Replaced the ballast again. Failed again two weeks ago. Sealed the whole thing in spray sealant. I just went to my car today and the whole F'in light is now dead. LED eyebrow and everything. Debating on replacing either just the whole assembly again (found for "cheap" on ebay) or spending nearly the same amount on replacement halogens. I love the xenon look, but this is getting old. And has anyone tried LED bulbs in the halogen setup?

I have some condensation in my driver side headlight, I am still under bumper to bumper CPO warranty but of course the dealer is saying that is not covered under warranty and told me the part assembly alone would be $1100. Which I could not believe, so I have been searching online for an OEM one (Part # 22934024, which is the HID one) and it is saying part discontinued everywhere I look.

Anyone know if they have a replacement part out for it? Or perhaps a newer regal GS (I have 2012 GS) headlight assembly will fit?
Did u find something cuz I have the same problem

Finding a used one on eBay or carpart.com is your best bet. Also the newer assembly (14-17) won't fit the 11-13 to answer the question that was in the quote.

I'm not sure where you got that Part #, but in the current GM EPC the Part # for the LHS HID / T4F headlamp assembly is 22794767 (RHS is 22794766). A quick Google search looks like they're around $300-$400.

There is no specific GS headlamp - it's just a 2011-15 Regal HID lamp. They made them in HID and non-HID versions; all GS' have HID, but you could get HID in other trim levels.

I would go to a different dealer though . . . I don't understand why that wouldn't be covered under warranty. Unless there is a crack on the lens that was clearly caused by some kind of collision, condensation inside the lamp means a bad seal, so a manufacturer defect. Did they give you a reason why they wouldn't cover it? My Dad had the same issue on another brand car, and they replaced BOTH headlamps under warranty, no questions asked.
GS HID
are out of stock almost everywhere and if you do find a good 1 its atleast 1100

I have a 2012 Buick Regal GS with the driver side headlight out. Same reason as most of you, moisture. I have had estimates from $1300 to $1700. The problem is, these HID headlights assembly are hard to find locally. If so many people are having the same issue, you would think it would be a recall. As much as I love my car, had I known I couldn't change a light bulb in for $10 to $25, I would not have bought this car.

I empathize with your frustration, and I had the same issue with my 2012 Regal GS. I found some aftermarket replacement headlight assemblies (not made by GM). I did not feel like I was losing anything by purchasing assemblies not made by GM, since clearly GM did not know what they were doing when they made the originals. Post 75 in this thread describes the replacement headlight assembly I bought on eBay for my 2012 GS. These still cost me several hundred dollars, but were cheaper than the price you mentioned.

Post 80 in the same thread describes my experience in installing it.
The appearance of the ones I bought is somewhat different from the original - not in its external shape, but in that it does not have the visible "blue ring" inside the front glass cover. This difference does not bother me, since I bought a matching pair. It might have bothered me if I only bought one. I bought a pair because while only the driver's side had failed, I did sometimes see moisture on the passenger side too, and I figured it was just a matter of time.
