Top Speed Tales!

94 RMS @110 just shuts down, comes back, shuts down, comes back.......she WANTS to go a lot more...

Hypertech Power Programmer 3 will stop that nonsense quick. Part # 30026. I got lucky and grabbed one on Ebay for $45. Not as good as a full computer tune but helpful in speedo correction, speed limiter and trans shift points and line pressure. Uvaldi.

Thanks for that info - will need to get a hold of one once the seats and new seat belts are back in the car...

**Edit: Yuck, $300-400 on eBay - anyone close to Greenville/Spartanburg SC willing to remove the limiter in a couple weeks?

**Edit 2: Will the same tool even work on a '91?

look, its not how long you live, its how you live it🙂

I had a s-rated tire blow at 120 mph on my 64 bonneville. I believe in speed rated tires.
😱

dam I guess I should take it easy my tires are rated at 90 top speed but i was doing about 110 this weekend even smoked a newer model cadi sts or something. most drivers get surprised/scared when they see my driving the rms like its a vette. They dont know the handling is great for a car that big.

The speed rating of the tires is worth considering, but so is the condition of your speed rated tires. I'm sure Ozzy and some of the others can share horror stories. I also understand that loosing a wheel weight at over a hundred makes the deceleration process undesirably exciting for the driver.

I thought the speed rating blurb on tirerack.com's site, http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=35, was pretty interesting reading...

[excerpt]

"In Germany some highways do not have speed limits and high speed driving is permitted. Speed ratings were established to match the speed capability of tires with the top speed capability of the vehicles to which they are applied. Speed ratings are established in kilometers per hour and subsequently converted to miles per hour (which explains why speed ratings appear established at "unusual" mile per hour increments). Despite the tire manufacturer's ability to manufacturer tires capable of high speeds, none of them recommend the use of their products in excess of legal speed limits. [🙄] The maximum operating speed of a vehicle must be limited to the lowest speed rated tire on the vehicle.

Speed ratings are based on laboratory tests where the tire is pressed against a large diameter metal drum to reflect its appropriate load, and run at ever increasing speeds (in 6.2 mph steps in 10 minute increments) until the tire's required speed has been met.

It is important to note that speed ratings only apply to tires that have not been damaged, altered, under-inflated or overloaded. Additionally, most tire manufacturers maintain that a tire that has been cut or punctured no longer retains the tire manufacturer's original speed rating, even after being repaired because the tire manufacturer can't control the quality of the repair."

Hey, you big speeders, was your car in 3rd gear or 4th gear at the high speeds?

Overdrive. It did kick down at 120 then engaged OD at 130 and then climbed to terminal speed. Uvaldi.

yea i leave it in overdrive. never got the hang of shifting gears in a automatic. before i turned roady i always had toyota manual trans.

I dug deep to find this oldie! Had somebody ask me the top speed of my barge, only had done 100 in the past. It was still pulling hard so I gotta get rid of the limiter. I'm going to Speedweek next month to help wrench on a friends car and would like to get there a little quicker!

Found that out the hard way. Passing two tractor trailers on a straightaway on US-54 in Kansas. Had my foot next to the radiator, I think. When the car hit about 100, all of a sudden it was like I stepped in mashed potatoes. Fortunately I had enough headway to safely complete the pass.

Later, I went to dealer complaining that it shouldn't happen until 108 mph. I was told that it can happen any time close to that and that there were no adjustments to get it to only happen at 108 mph. If I want a higher top end, buy a car with correct equipment to do that.

The dealer, is not offering the best advice, or source for eliminating the top speed sensor! They have nothing but OEM re-flash, or eprom programs to download. If you want to eliminate the top speed injector cut off, you should get a PCM tune with the top speed eliminated in the tune. Many tuners out there can do that, and here is one I recommend. http://www.pcmofnc.com/

I agree. Various aftermarket ways to do that. Dealer was quoting factory line, which, as a franchised dealer, is about all he is authorized to do. As you correctly point out, he could point out that there are unauthorized modifications that are available, ones that potentially would void my warranty, but that they were out there. [This happened while car was under warranty.]

Then again, I wasn't looking to go over 108 mph, just be able to get up to that.

I just couldn't resist when we redid the l05 we went for a test run and got the old girl going with speedo straight up and down with more to go chickened out due to tires and cops could be on the road. Kid sent a picture one time showing 100 mph and tach around 3000 with caption top end unknown .Can't remember if tach reading is correct but there was lots left to go . Love these old cars just speedy rolling chesterfields . Later bake
