TourX / Sportback battery removal

Just had to replace my first battery on my '19 sportback. Bought it new, so this was the battery from Opel Germany. Online found I needed a size 94 AGM, so bought that before starting the project. When I take cover off, find OEM battery (Varta) was much smaller in size than the 94 I had now. New battery fit just fine, but they had two threaded holes in the support tray for the hold down clamp so I used the outer hole. Also battery cover fit new 94 one perfectly. So is this a factory cost reduction to control shipping cost weight?

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread. Just changed my 2018 battery and this thread made it much easier.

Hey ya'll - I just replaced the battery on my '18 TourX and here is a great video that goes through step-by-step in every detail. I could not find anything on the TourX, so I tried searching the YT for Malibu instead and it worked. Hope this helps someone...

Car Care Kiosk has been my go to source for some videos on how to replace things.

I like that site as well - great for wiper blades. Tried it for the battery, unfortunately the critical steps were with generic old-school connections, not TourX though the page I was on said it was for TourX.

Finally had to replace the battery. I've been noticing a slight slowdown in the starting mechanism for about a month, so I've kinda been expecting it to fail. Got in the car this morning and it wouldn't recognize the key fob, so I put the fob on the sensor located in the front of the cup holders and it started. I turned it off after about 30 seconds and it wouldn't start again.

I appreciate this video. It's always the little tricks that make these jobs easier and the video covers all of them.

I just put in the car's third battery. I didn't even get two years out of the second one. (NAPA replacement.) The car was fine in the morning and then later in the day, it was totally dead. The battery read 3.5 volts and not surprisingly, it didn't take a charge. I'm happy it died in the garage instead of out somewhere. No other symptoms other than ASS not functioning for a few months and the indicated charge was often 14.5v. I guess I should have been more proactive about it, but expected I could get at least two years from it.

Damn! You’re on your third battery? That’s almost $1000 worth of batteries! My first one lasted almost 6 years.

I am on my second one since late 2022.
The sucker will hardly get the ASS going unless I have it on the charger to top it off the day or two before.
Still debating whether to get the Optima yellow top or not.

Maybe I haven’t been paying attention to how often everyone is changing batteries. I’d be interested to see battery performance stats for cars with ASS vs cars without ASS.

I wonder if it would help me to hook up a battery charger every few months. I typically do 500-800mi of driving a month, and it's hard to believe that the car can't maintain the battery properly over this amount of driving.

If I don't drive my car for 3 weeks, it goes into low battery mode and sometimes will not start without a jumpbox.

Can someone explain the whole battery charging to 14v or higher and how thats an indication of a failing battery?
Thanks

Well my battery has been charging at 15.4v while driving so I guess thats not good.

Last week when it was warm I turned the tune off and ASS was functional....at the time charging was around 13.6V. The car sat over the weekend without driving and today it was in the teens. I noticed the charging was around 15.6V and ASS no longer functions. I think I will see if after a few days of driving it is back to normal...maybe it is getting marginal and a few days sitting in the cold is problematic for it.

Today we were above zero (in the teens) and my battery went back to normal charging and the auto stop started working again.

Mine was topped off with a charger, yet the ASS was still offline the past couple of days. The freezer temperature is sure the culprit.

Poor cold weather performance is the first sign a battery is nearing its end.

Mine went stone dead during the cold snap. Interior lights wouldn't even work. I park outside, so I used my NOCO GBX55 jump pack and it lit right up. Took it to a local shop and got the battery replaced (Interstate MTX-94R). The tech had never seen a TourX, but he got it done. Then, he pulled out of the shop and backed it into a parking spot. I asked why he did that, and he said "I just liked the way it looked while I walked away." I'm guilty of the same thing.
