Transmission Whine

It's my car that i purchased through the dealer i work for. unfortunately, its just kinda how it works being an employee at a dealership. If i go to the owner, its gonna cause problems. If i complain to GM or bomb a survey, I'll likely no longer have a job. now.....if my car just breaks down, it becomes more of a priority, only because they don't want to pay for a ton or rental car time. You would think that being an employee that it would be a snap of the fingers, but it couldn't be further from the truth.

I’ve always wondered about that dynamic. That sucks. 🙁

And that is the new 9 speed transmission Ford and GM developed? And the dealer or GM have no TSB and do not care?
Excuse me if I did not read entire thread and missed something...

Absolutely stock. I actually work for a GM service center and regularly skim for new recalls and bulletins in GM Global Connect. There isn't anything "official" GM has released on this. My next step is just writing a ticket for my vehicle and play the waiting game with our tech. Employee vehicles are lowest priority (if vehicle runs and is safe to drive). But my goal is to get him to call TAC and start a case for the concern. TAC often knows about common concerns that GM is currently investigating but hasn't made anything public about it. However, he could likely sit on the phone for 45 minuntes just for them to have him check a bunch of stuff and end up with a "no problem found". I'm actually going to be writing the ticket today for it.

I have the same noise with my 2018 GS, however my noise goes away if I put any amount of pressure on the brake pedal. So maybe it's due to the Brembo brakes?

It also goes away if you press on the accelerator. I honestly believe it has to do with Torque System Management and how the transmission skips lower gears on downshifts. I showed our tech the noise, he said he wasn't sure, and he didn't seem like he wanted to waste a bunch of time with TAC. He did a scan and checked the ECM and TCM history. Nothing popped up. Being an employee has its perks and disadvantages. The disadvantage being, techs speak their minds to us and we come last. And it's not like I can complain to GM, I value my job. So, for now at least, I'm just going to let it ride. If it turns into more than a sound, I'll go from there and keep everyone posted on here. Definitely is an annoyance though.

Could it be a vacuum leak in the brake booster?

Jordan, just like us we can take it to another dealership.
What a great idea... Norm way to think outside the box.

This car has a bunch of weird little noises imo so I understand why they focused on a quiet interior so much lol

That is true, but I work a lot of hours and its a hassle to try and schedule with another dealer. good thing is I have factory warranty for quite some time, and I have GM extended warranty to back that up when it goes out. I'm just tired of worrying about it and it doesn't SEEM to be more than a noise so far.

UPDATE: So, it is not a transmission whine. We are pretty sure it is from the rear diff. The whine has been getting louder, and on top of that, the rear diff has started leaking since my last oil change. While looking into the leak, my tech found a bulletin describing the exact sound. So we are going to be replacing the rear diff for the leak and whine, then I'm hoping there will be no more whining. Part shows to be available in Lansing, MI, but is on a back order because GM is about 30 days behind on parts. I expect it will be 1-2 months to get the part. Ill update everyone again once its here and replaced. GM Document ID: 4360698

That is a really good update and maybe a good news because it may be my problem à a lot of Regal’s owner. I tried to found the TSB but I can’t 😞. Do you have a link for that TSB please ?

I'm pretty sure that DOC ID is something only your tech can see. It's not a regular TSB. This was found in SI while searching for rear diff leaks. Here is a copy and paste from the page we are looking at. I do not believe this is something the general public will have access to. My tech basically went into SI and searched "differential" for my VIN and started looking at everything that had the word "leak". Thats when he came across this. It has incomplete information. It says the whine is between 50-60 and goes up or down with the vehicles speed. However, it also happens at 30mph and at 20 mph.

Constant Noise
Cause
Correction
Inspect for the proper gear oil levels prior to performing system diagnosis. Refer to Rear Axle Lubricant Replacement.
Low gear oil levels
Faulty oil seal or other type external leaks may contribute to lower than required fluid levels. Refer to Rear Differential Carrier Leak Diagnosis.
Fill to proper level with gear oil GM P/N 12378514 (Canadian P/N 88901045).
Worn, loose, or missing differential mounts
Repair or replace the differential mounts as required.
Worn propeller shaft constant velocity joints
Replace the propeller shaft assembly. Refer to Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement.
Worn bearing in the torque tube assembly
Replace the torque tube assembly.
Bearing noise within the differential assembly
A "grinding" or "roar" type noise will increase or decrease relative to the vehicle speed.
  1. Check for the proper fluid level. Fill as required.
  2. If the noise continues, replace unit as required.
Gear set "whine" noise within the differential assembly
A "whine" type noise will increase or decrease relative to the vehicle speed, approximately 80–97 km/h (50–60 mph).
  1. Check for the proper fluid level. Fill as required.
  2. Replace unit as required.
