Cold Air Intake Options & Information:

I thought it might be nice to post all of the cold air intakes available to the Roadmasters.

For the LT1 & TBI cars. All of them.

From the "swiss cheesed" airbox to the RAISS, SSRI, or Ram-it.

I am very familiar with two Cold Air Intakes for the 1994-1996 models, so I will start with them,
and you guys can post what you have worked with, or are familiar with.

Here goes:

The 'ol Fernco Sewer Pipe and S&B filter was my first CIA. It was cheap, and it got rid of the home plate, first base, and other stock intake stuff. It consisted of the Fernco rubber pipe, hose clamps, MAF extension harness, S&B filter, and a little S&B filter for the Air Pump.

Most importantly, it sounded great! 😎

I did this because I couldn't afford a RAISS yet, which is the intake I wanted from the start.


I added an AirForce 1 deflector, because Andy Simmons (who owns Impalaperformance.com)
was selling them on the ISSF Forum for $20.00. I added an Outer Wears Prefilter too.

Finally, I got the RAISS and AirForce 2 deflector. I chose Black Wrinkle powder coat, which is now a discontinued finish. I like it because it always looks good. I didn't want a shiney finish that I had to worry about. I guess I like the old school look of black wrinkle.

The end result of my CIA is right here. I added a "short ram" intake from a Corvette, and had it Ceramic Coated by Performance Coatings.
I also had new Outerwears Pre-Filters made, switched to red silicone connectors & t-bolt clamps.

I think I am done with my CIA. Finally. 😀

If you have Dan's Tri-Y's and they are ceramic coated, this place coated them.






Another CIA is the RAM-IT.

I have never had one, and I like how it looks. The only reason I didn't look into this system further is the fact that I know that I would hit a parking lot stop or something, and break it.

SSRI or Super Stealth Ram Intake was my second choice, after the RAISS.

I like the fact that it does not hide the water pump and the front of the motor, since you can see through it. That is the one thing that I don't like about the RAISS intake. I have a lot of nicely powdercoated parts, like my waterpump body w/ Meziere pump, and it is hidden by the RAISS.

I didn't go this route because I was afraid it would become scratched up, and show it's age. (I can re-powdercoat my RAISS 😉 )

I'm not sure I understand exactly what parts you are asking about, but here goes:

1) Are you asking about the black rubber boot that connects the throttle body to the MAF? If so, it's a Fernco boot, available at any Home Depot or Lowes. 4" x 3".

2) I think you are asking about the deflector in front of the radiator. If so, that is an Air Force 2 deflector. Made by Impalaperformance.com, makers of the RAISS intake.

Here's the old Home Depot special

Two 3" PVC 45 Street elbows
A short piece of PVC pipe to join the 45 elbows together
A can of PVC glue
A 3" Fernco Boot
Some paint

Cost me about $17 altogether I think...
You'll also have to block off the hole in the intake when you remove home plate. A hockey puck makes a good plug. I just used a Skippy Peanut Butter jar lid myself😛 The intake gives a little HP boost, and the engine sounds cool when you put the pedal down😎

With the K&N intake, that doesn't take care of the inlet for the homeplate does it? Is there a better fix than a hockey puck or peanut butter jar top? I really don't feel comfortable with plugging it up with just that...

I forgot to mention that the RAISS isn't exactly in my budget.

A hockey puck fits in there very tightly. Aslong as you tighten the clamp down, you will never have any issues. Hell, I drove mine around with no clamp on it. Never had any issues until the car went lean, backfired, and poped the puck up enough to let air and shut the car off.(false MAF reading). With it clamped down, theres no way your getting that puck to go anywhere. When I bought my 96 caprice, it had this big billet looking plug in the Home Plate spot. It had a lip on the top, so it would never fall in, but I have no clue where the guy got it, or how much it cost. The car had a big cam, and valve train installed, so the guy did spend some money on it.

1) Car Looks GREAT Matt!

2) Mulvey, if you don't like the hockey puck mod, you can always get an F-Body (Camaro) throttle body boot. It is like the B-Body, but since the Camaro doesn't have the home plate on it, it doesn't have that hole in it.

Ok, I am going to ask a dumb question about the home plate. What is the purpose of this piece if you guys are blocking it off with a hockey puck? What function does the "home plate" provide? Thanks, I will hang up and wait for my answer.
