K&N drop in filter recommended for GS owners

2012 Regal GS, Standard Trans. K&N filter in the stock air box for about 10,000 miles. My check engine light came on at 10,800 miles. There was an air leak, so the dealer replaced a solenoid. The CE light came on again the next day. I could hear a very loud blowing air sound when the turbo engaged...not the usual spool and release sound, but more like an air gun. I was on the highway in 4th gear and the car had no power...just a straight up 2.0L engine with little or no turbo.

Dealer says the oil on my K&N contaminated the MAF sensor...voided the warranty...$580. My question is, where was that sound coming "air gun" from? K&N claims it's not possible for their filters to contaminate the MAF sensor and dealers just uses it as an excuse to void warranties.

Apparently, K&N will step in and resolve this problem directly with the dealer or at least cover the cost of the repair. I'll keep you posted.

Don't let them BS you. We had the exact same turbo issue with our totally stock GS. It was in the shop 23 out of the first 45 days of owning it.. In the end they replaced the entire turbo and it has been fine ever since.

K&N filters are "wet" meaning they are covered in oil. Before installation, they should be wiped down to remove any excess oil. Oil on your Maf will NOT void your car's warranty. Remove the Maf from the intake and spray it down with Maf cleaner.

Your dealership is trying to pay tricks on you.

I've run K&Ns on every car I've ever owned, performance or not, turbo or not, and I've never had a single issue with them, definitely never had them cause problems with the MAF, etc. before.

Sounds like the dealer is trying to screw you.

I just got off the phone with K&N. They need the bad MAF sensor, the work order blaming the K&N for the malfunction and the error code that caused the check engine light.

I've also had a K&N in every car I've ever owned. All of which were GM cars. I own not one, but two buicks!... and yes, I feel like the dealer is trying to screw me. MY next car will be a BMW.

And... I'll stick with stock filters, thanks for the heads up 🙂

Usually the issue from cotton/oil filters is when owners re-oil after cleaning, they put far too much on which causes it to come off the filter and end up on the MAF. The dealer's actions aren't necessarily unprecedented - on LS1s there was a TSB for cotton oil filters causing transmission rough shifting issues. The oil would coat the MAF and lead to false readings, and the computer would incorrectly adjust the line pressure in the transmission based off the load calculated partially from the MAF.

6 ACDelco filters (4 cabin, 2 engine) delivered for $86 bucks, should last me as long as I'll ever want to keep this car...

how did you get that deal?

Also -

KN filters are junk, if you care about your engine you wouldnt use them.

Funny how my engine oil analysis reports are beyond perfect running them! If they where junk my reports would show it as shit would get into the motor which it does not. Also have reoiled may may times. MAF is always bone dry when I pull it and clean it for safety sake every oil change.

Please be aware the filters I bought are for my Buick LaCrosse, you'll need to check on prices for your Regal. I usually keep throwing stuff in my cart until the shipping costs tip up a notch- I buy in chucks of cheapest shipping. Whenever you buy something from RA they will email you a code for 5% off your next order. People post them on RetailMeNot to help others save. They are not one-time use as far as I know but sometimes expire, just keep plugging them in until you find a good one. The one I show here worked as of this morning...

I've also used K&N before (and never had a problem) but don't need any hassles with oily MAF sensors and have no interest in pulling it out to clean it (the sensor). Since the LaCrosse only calls for a new cabin air filter every 22,500 miles and an engine filter every 45,000 miles (per my LaCrosse maintenance schedule) I figure I'm good for a long while at these cheap prices without risking any BS from my dealer. To each his own of course 🙂

I had a K&N in my truck for 10 years and put on over 100K, never had a problem. When my GS needs a new filter, I'll put in another K&N.

Lmao. Sorry forgot first hand real world experience wasn't real! Guess I'll listen to all others since they seem to know my car better and their reports not based on my cars reports are better for my car. Good call dude!

your first hand experance have any data to back it up?

oh thats right. none.

just a sucker that fell for KN marketing.

testing vs some guys experence.

I'll go with atual testing, not some guy saying his experence was ok.

Dear god you don't even deserve a response from me but I don't want people believing your stupidity.

Explain Einstein how me buying and installing a filter, testing the oil to see how much out side contaminates got past it and into the motor is not a test?!

Stop being stupid and think before you speak.

Surpreme arrogance fits perfectly into the stupidity category and diminishes greatly any validity you think everyone should bow down to.

What were we talking about again?😀
