Yes, I did it myself. It takes patience, and even more when using LEDs since it is designed for the bulbs.

All of those circles with 2 holes is where the bulbs go. At this point I had already removed them.
Along the left side are 2 LEDs, on the right are 4 LEDs. Those are for the function indicators. You can see "Auto" below.

I can't have overly-bright lights on inside when I'm driving without having to dim them. These are not too bright in that respect, but brighter than stock.
The HVAC case unsnaps from the dash (1 on each side), then slips out.
Remove 4 very, very small screws from the back to access the inside. Use a small tool to unplug the white plug in the image to get the board out. I had to turn on the parking lights and probe the plug to find the Pos and Neg wires to be sure the LEDs were installed with the correct polarity. It also helps to test their operation while still on the table.
I won't lie. It took several tries before I was able to get the little LEDs installed and working right, but there ya go.
Using incandescent bulbs means not having to worry about polarity. They will also be the stock brightness and will evenly light all of the switches. I used LEDs because I don't want to take it apart to replace another bulb!
