What would cause this kind of wheel damage?

I got my car back from the dealer yesterday and noticed this nasty gouge to the wheel. The tire sidewall shows no impact damage and the gouge almost hits the bead.

The dealer rotated the tires, that was it.

Thoughts?

To me, it looks like the tech might have leaned the tire up against the lift or something after taking it off for the rotation and dinging it. I've seen that happen on a few occasions.

lol .. this literally happened to me two weeks ago .. they were putting the car on the lift at my dealer because I complained that it felt like the car was pulling to the right a little .. I get a call saying that the tech hit the rim on the lift and that they were going to replace it with a brand new one .. I'm glad they owned up to it but what they did to my rim looked a lot worse .. good luck my friend

Great, they fix one problem and create two new ones. (They also didn't reset the TPMS sensors after they rotated the tires) 🙄

Thanks for the information, I am emailing the pic to the service writer and see what he says.

Good luck. GM had to replace two of my wheels because of the idiots at my local dealer.

Mechanics have a habit of dropping the wheel on the floor after taking them off. The higher the lift the harder it hits the floor. There may have been a nut on the floor at the time. The tire may have flexed enough to for the nut to hit the rim. That's what it looks like to me.

The mechanic where I had my next to last rotation let the nut spin off and hit the rim creating ugly scratches. And I wash my rims almost bi-weekly with water and no soap just to preserve them. I didn't catch it in time to complain. Chock it up to life lessons I guess.

I put the car back into the shop today. The service manager was borderline pr$%k about it but the service writer stepped up to the plate and went to bat for me. He finally agreed to fix the wheel using a mobile wheel repair service. As long as it comes out OK, I'm find with that.

The service manager was not very personable, he kept talking through the service writer instead of directly to me. People like that should not be interfacing with the public. 🙄

I'm tooling around in an Impala while they get my issue squared away. What a major POS the Impala is. 😡

Glad to hear it is fixed. At least the dealership was good about it and paid for the repair.

Glad the fix was invisible. Sometimes the fix can be worse than the original problem. Btw the new Impala looks very good to me, but haven't driven one yet.
