Disable Automatic Stop/Start

I like the auto stop. No point idling the motor at red lights or when traffic isn't moving. But it could be a lot better if there was a two second delay before the motor cuts out. When you come to a stop sign or a right turn on a red (where permitted) and no one is around it's a stop and go situation. Its clunky when the motor cuts out and restarts. That acts as a deterrent to coming to a full stop and encourages rolling stops. It would be smoother and safer to keep the motor running for those stop and go situations. Has anybody heard of a time delay mod?
It's my understanding that there should be a delay and it seems some of ours (mine included) are not working properly.

There is no mention of an auto stop delay in the owners manual. I'll check with my dealer but I've never heard of such a thing. I someone invents one I hope they become a millionaire.

There is definitely a "Drive thru" feature with stop start where if you stop, then start to creep forward again up to 19?mph it won't re-stop as you advance.
I don't mind the s/s - I find once stopped I can lightly feather off the brake and the engine restarts while the vehicle does not move or my foot completely off the brake pedal. Easy.

A delay as in it should not activate until the car has been at a complete stop for 2,3,4,5 seconds. Mine would cut off often when I had yet to even come to a complete stop at all. I could be creeping into a parking spot and it would cut off and the car would jerk. Every day I pull up to my house and go to back into my driveway it will cut off before I can throw it in reverse. I have seen others here report that theirs is not that sensitive (has somewhat of a delay before activating).

Before installing the Smart Stop Start module in mine, I would just temporarily tip it into manual mode to prevent the auto stop. Remembering to put it back to automatic? Forgot more than once.

Yup been there lol... Especially with the music blasting it takes a while to hear the engine screaming bloody murder 😱. I really don't know why they didn't just program it to shift at redline like other cars so in manual.

Thinking it is 8 MPH. Don't remember which thread I see here.

Just found the forum after searching for a way to turn off start/stop. In my mind, one of the worst mistakes GM has made. I guess I will try the module off Amazon first. I am driving 350mi. Friday to go pick up a 20 Regal SB with AWD and 19K miles. I'm a wagon and hatchback fan so I figure I would try one out. I owed a 15 Regal for a short time and enjoyed it. Trading in a 21 Sportage which was a nice SUV but only got it to haul a dog kennel and don't have to do that anymore.

The easiest way to Disable Automatic Stop/Start is to open the hood before starting the engine.

As it turns out, the engine auto-stop-start does not operate if the car is started with the hood open. Moreover, the system remains off even after the hood is closed, effectively disabling the system from functioning until the next key cycle. For those who despise the system, this could be welcomed knowledge.

To take advantage of the workaround, one would need to pop the hood (before starting the vehicle), start the car with the hood open, and then shut the hood.

The "hood open" disabler box has a side-effect of disabling the remote keyfob start, and I sure do like that remote keyfob start in 100F weather to pre-cool the car. Enough that I removed the disabler box.

The old version of the Smart Stop Start box didn't disable the remote start but if you used the remote start the Auto-Start-Stop would operational like you didn't have the box. The work around for that was to turn car off and start again from the driver's seat once you got in to disable the Start-Stop action. I didn't like that and returned mine when during trial period when I found the Range Tech device.

However, the lastest version of that Smart Stop Start device installs on the battery not the hood switch and remote start works as normal without enabling the Auto-Start-Stop. See it here.

The Range Tech device does same thing, plugs into OBD2 port. I used mine for over 3 years until I got Trifecta which disables Start Stop with programming.

After I saw the mention of the Trifecta Tune, I looked them up. Pretty cool what it can do but I am a cheapskate and the SB is plenty fast enough for my applications. Now I need to work on getting the windows tinted. I can't not have that in 100 degree heat in TX. The reality is it will be garaged most days. Work just leased me a 23 Yukon Denali in Black which is a killer in the heat but it is the only one they could find. The Duramax Diesel is nice.

I have also a Trifecta tune.

I was gonna make you a sweet deal on an Axxess AXSSO-GM module that disables ASS, but it looks like it only works with 2018 and 2019 models. I was positive it worked for 2020 models also, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I think I paid like $108 for it and I have previously advertised it for $75 with no interest from anyone.

I'll let it go for $50 (shipping included) if anyone is interested. I used it for about 6 months until I paid for the Trifecta Tune with ASS disable. It works with the hood pin switch and installs in about 30 minutes. It worked flawlessly for me and it would be simple to remove if you're worried about a dealer warranty issue.

Also, if anyone can confirm, for sure, why it wouldn't work with a 2020 model, please enlighten me. It comes with two harnesses and I could've sworn one was for 2018 models and the other was for 2019-20 models.

Let me do some research this weekend on it. I might be interested. I made a 300 mile drive back yesterday. I left dealer without popping hood and didn't catch it stopping. When I stopped for fuel, I did pop hood before starting. We took off to the lake and same thing, popped hood when I left but not when we stopped for lunch and I didn't notice switching on.

I'm often surprised at how many people don't seem to be bothered by ASS. I'm also frequently surprised by the creativity of the "home brew" methods for disabling ASS. For me it was a no brainer because my daily commute is full of stop and go traffic and sitting through multiple light cycles. My ASS would engage between 12 and 15 times each way.

One thing to note... many of the Sportback owners on this forum have had to replace their OEM batteries already. Mine is still putting out a solid 14.4V.

Just adding some info I saw when I logged into my Walmart account earlier. I bought the AXSSO-GM through one of their 3rd party sellers and they still had my order info. This is the description listed with the item and it does say it works with current year. Only problem is I don't know how "current" this product description is.

METRA AXSSOGM is for GM 2016 thru current year. This item allows the override of the STOP/START engine featureand can be used with either a factory or aftermarket radio. No programming required and a simple 2-wire setup

Product Features:

  • Allows The Overide of OEM Start Stop Feature
  • Works With OEM or Aftermarket Audio
  • Simply User Control Once Installed
  • Updateable and Programmable via Web

I've gotten so used-to defeating ASS using manual-mode, or letting it ASS when I think a stop will be lengthy and I haven't let it ASS in a while, that when I drive another vehicle - I have to retrain my brain on that.

Replaced battery once so far under warranty on our TourX when it had only about 30k mi on it

ASS in our cars suck. It is way too sensitive.

Driven a 6 speed car in Europe for about a week putting in over 1200 miles.

Less than 5 times, ASS was in the way. Few of these, I needed to shut out of a gear to get started again.

In some ways makes me think Buick/GM thought this car would not sell well, or had repetitive buyers and had ASS come on so fast, as a bracket in their CARB MPG bracket.
