I would have considered the TourX but my wife hates the way wagons look. She also hates hatchbacks, but she can handle the sportback because it doesn't really look like a hatchback (even though it is).

I am just glad she didn't figure out that I was buying a car that has a 5.6s 0-60.

Friend of my Dad's had a fiance who gave him an ultimatum vs an old Vette he had. He sold the Vette and then came to his senses and they never got married.

He made up for it by ordering a 1987 Oldsmobile 442 exactly as he wanted it spec-ed. Lucky SOB ordered it a few weeks before they announced the end of 442 production. While he waited for his order to arrive the dealer kept calling him desperately trying to buy it back before the car could even be delivered. The dealer was firmly but politely refused.

Honestly, the Vette probably would’ve gotten me killed back then. I’m a bit of a risk taker and adrenaline junkie. Been a biker since 1980 too - so it’s hard to believe they haven’t taken me out- but the bikes stay until I’m ready to get rid of them. Or... I could sell the bikes and get the Vette back! I tease that 2nd wives are better (been with mine longer than the first) but I also say I have no opinion on 2nd husbands, I've only been someone's first husband! 😁

If I brought home a Corvette my wife's only question would be "is it a manual." If it wasn't THEN she'd want me to take it back! (The current Corvette is dead to her for that reason.)

I'm 61, the wife is 59. She has a 2020 Buick Encore GX AWD with 1,500 kms on it and I have my 2019 Sportback with 14,650 kms. She had a 2012 Verano before that and a Skyhawk before that.
Fell in love with the Sportback while we were on holiday in the UK a couple years ago when we had a Vauxhall Insignia as a rental.

I am one of the newbies you speak of. I’ll be 47 at the end of this month and this is my first car since age 16. First car was an ’83 Mercury Lynx (Ford Escort) and ironically it was a hatchback. Since then I’ve only had trucks. My vehicles were:

In the last 12 years I’ve also had two work vehicles; a 2007 Chevy Tahoe LS and a 2012 Ford Explorer XLT.

Yes I had a lot of S-10’s. GM had a plant in my hometown and they built the S-10 and GMC S-15’s. My dad also worked there for 25 years.

My dad instilled the “Buy American” value in me from an early age, even though he knew there was no such thing as a purely American car anymore. The idea of Buy American is much more than just what brand of car you have, but it’s the reason I only buy vehicles manufactured by “The Big Three”. I once wanted to buy a Honda Accord until my dad told me I wouldn’t be allowed to park it on his property. Ahhh… good times!

Which brings me to why I chose to buy the Regal Sportback. I lost my Sport Trac in the flood of 2016 and I’ve been driving my work truck for 5 years. I‘ve always wanted something smooth and comfortable, so I started looking at Cadillacs, particularly the ATS. While searching for an ATS I ran across the Sportback and instantly fell in love. I couldn’t believe GM actually built a car resembling a European sedan.

I missed out on a couple of other Sportbacks and that’s when I found one at CarMax in Illinois. I paid $200 to have it transferred to Baton Rouge and the rest is history. So far, I couldn’t be happier with my purchase!

Wow.. when I stumbled upon this thread and voted in the poll, I didn't realize at 63 I'd be a "super-senior."
I took my driving test in my mother's Gremlin... the worst car built until the Yugo snatched its crown. I bought my first real car from my grandparents, a '66 Mercury Monterey with a monster 427ci 7L V8 in a family sedan. Big as a city block, it held 6 passengers while everyone's luggage fit in the trunk as we careened to and from Florida vacations. Even had seat belts and a Sears aftermarket air conditioner. Of course we wired in an 8-track tape player and bookshelf speakers. I drove that car until the frame rusted through and drove it, almost sideways, to the junk yard.

Last week I sold my 2015 Audi A8 twin turbo V8, probably the finest car I will ever own.

The TourX is a hidden gem. The German chassis is compliant, takes direction well, and always feels planted. The brakes are top-notch. the steering is a tad vague, it is not a sports car yet it tackles twisties just fine. Ditto the transmission, but if I want torque NOW I'll take the 4.2L supercharged Jag V8 and routinely turn in quarter-mile times in the mid - 13's while salivating over that V8's roar.
The TourX is as competent a car as there is. Great driving dynamics coupled with superior interior space in a superlative design that gets the best gas mileage of any wagon in its size that is not a diesel. If the mechanicals are sound it really is a long-term keeper.

That 1996 Mustang GT, tho! First year for the 4.6L V-6 with 215hp. Look at us now…getting 40hp more with less than half the displacement and two fewer cylinders.

I've owned 20+ 84-87 Turbo Regals. Many friends with MC SS, Hurst Olds, 442, Syclone, Typhoon, Supra, CTS-V, SSR, and EVO. The friend that owed the EVO owned a GT-R while stationed in Japan for 8 years. I still own the 1st GN I purchased and drove it like I stole it. Never considered parking it or not putting a lot of miles on it because of rarity. It has 228k miles on it and is undergoing a restomod style restoration, but will retain the original drivetrain. Wheels, tires, brakes, suspension, lighting, interior and very subtle exterior mods. I would like to get a 70-72 GS or Skylark to build a GSX clone. Or get another NA V6 or V8 84-87 Regal and do a 455 big block Buick or Turbo LS swap.

Caught a lot of flack when I owned the Mazda, despite half the parts on that car being marked/stamped/cast with the "FoMoCo" logo.

Cars are meant to be driven. I'm the philistine who if given a ridiculous sum of money would buy something like a "no miles" Superbird and drive the shit out of it.

Growing up my Dad's best friend worked as a salesman at the local Buick, Chevrolet, Pontiac, and Cadillac dealer (this was back in the days before GM got really disciplined about what lines they wanted dealers to cover.) I got to ride in a Buick Regal T-type about an 86ish model, it was a trade in. I wish Dad had bought that instead of the Oldsmobile. We took it on a backroad blast until the digital dash started flashing "88" miles an hour while you could still feel the engine pulling and the acceleration happening.

Yeah I laugh because my Dad is firmly of the Boomer generation and looked sideways at my Highlander (build in Princeton Indiana) for being a "foreign car" but is just peachy about my Buick (built in Russelsheim Germany).

I might own one of those new "small" trucks one day and the irony is he'd be more comfortable seeing me in a Maverick (built in Mexico) than a Santa Cruz (built in Alabama).
